Animal Surgical & Emergency Center Externship

Since 1990, we have offered an externship program for veterinary students, with over 80 participants each year.  We accept junior or senior students, ideally for a two to four week rotation to fulfill private practice or elective curriculum requirements.  Shorter periods can be arranged.  For more information please see below.

Large Animal Neonatology & Intensive Care Medicine Externship

Each Spring the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine offers a two week elective in Large Animal Neonatology and Intensive Care Medicine at the New Bolton Center campus.  Thiks opportunity is open to veterinary students who completed their preclinical training and who have a special interest in equine neonatology, perinatology, and/or intensive care medicine.  For more information please see below.

Aquamed 2010

The Gulf States Consortium of Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, comprised of Auburn University, Mississippi State University, Louisianna State University, Texas A&M University and the University of Florida, announces AQUAMED 2010.  Course dates are June 7 to July 2, 2010.  AQUAMED is a four week aquatic animal pathobiology course relating to the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of important aquatic animal diseases.  Unique components of the aquatic environment and aquatic animal anatomy and physiology are also presented.  Ornamental fish, comercially important fin fish and shellfish are emphasized, with an overview of reptiles, marine mammals, and aquatic laboratory animals.  For information contact Dr. Ron Thune at 225-578-9680 or visit http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu/aquamed.htm#AQUAMED

 AASV Veterinary Internship Stipend

The National Pork Industry Foundation(NPIF) has provided funding for six veterinary students to gain experience in the swine industry through a summer internship with a swine practitioner.  THe NPIF stipends are intended for any 1st or 2nd year veterinary student, regardless of any previous swine experiences.  Students with little to no experience are highly encouraged to apply.  For more information go to www.aasv.org/students/npif.php

2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games: Rotation/Externship for Select Final Year Veterinary Students

The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games will be held in Lexington, KY in the Fall of 2010.  A unique rotation/externship for senior veterinary students committed to a career in equine sports medicine has been organized with the cooperation of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Veterinary Business Advisors, Inc. Externship 

Externship available for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students to work with Dr. Charlotte Lacroix on issues affecting veterinary medicine, including analysis of emerging business and legal issues, employer/employee contract negotiations, the buying and selling of veterinary practices and more. During your externship you will participate in conferences with clients and learn first hand the concerns faced by practice owners and their employees. You will also research and write about a topic that interests you, such as preparing for natural disaster, vaccine liability, electronic medical records and more. For more information go to www.veterinarybusinessadvisors.com

Humane Alliance of Western North Carolina (HAWNC) is a nationally recognized high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter non-profit organization located in Asheville, NC. We offer a veterinary externship program for the purpose of exposing senior veterinary students to a veterinary practice that concentrates in the area of companion animal surgical sterilization and to introduce them to a business that functions as a non-profit organization.

Chi Institute for Chinese Medicine Scholarships

The Chi Institute of Chinese Medicine is very pleased to announce its first scholarship program. Since our inception we have been dedicated to providing the very best training and education in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM).  Our scholarship program is directed to aid the new doctor while at the very beginning of their career, get a foothold in the student and skills of TCVM. We believe that the integrated study of TCVM with modern western medicine will provide doctors with a more complete understanding of health and disease.

New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association Externship Program

The NJVMA would like to invite students on clinical rotations to participate in a new externship program that will provide stipends of $1000 to support the expenses of participating in the program. The stipends will be awarded to students who secure an externship with an NJVMA member practice and successfully complete the plan they submit as part of their application for achieving the goals they set for themselves for their externship. 10 externships approved each calendar year. Students should apply early. Student will need to submit a brief essay explaining why they want to participate and what they hope to gain from the experience. They will also be required to submit a letter of approval from the Office of Academic Affairs acknowledging approval of the student’s externship plan. Students may obtain an application and a list of participating practices by using the Contact Us function at www.njvma.org Contact Paul Wolcott, Communications Director, at paulw@njvma.org or 732-938-5530

 

New England Aquarium Veterinary Student Externship

The New England Aquarium offers a unique experience to 3rd & 4th fourth year veterinary students by offering the opportunity to work in both a museum/institutional setting and in the field of aquatic animal medicine. 

Six to eight-week rotations are available for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students to complete veterinary externships in aquatic animal medicine at the New England Aquarium in Boston, MA. Rotations are a comprehensive introduction into aquatic animal husbandry and veterinary medicine. Students are rotated through all areas of the aquarium, which includes working with fish, invertebrates, birds, reptiles, amphibians, marine mammals, environmental quality and marine animal rescue/rehabilitation.
 
Applicants are accepted on a rolling basis. Because of limited availability, veterinary students should apply up to a year in advance. Externships are available from September 1 through June 30. Summer rotations are not available. Generally, no more than two externs positions are available per rotation.
 
All positions for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 have been filled. Please contact the Office of Volunteer Programs and Internships for more information on available externship dates for Fall 2009 and thereafter.

It’s more than just an interest in federal politics that drives an AVMA Governmental Relations Extern. It’s the desire to experience something completely different and accelerate their capacity for flexibility and increased self-confidence. This program is designed for you to build momentum each and every week. In just four weeks, you’ll go from being a bright eyed visitor to actually lobbying for your future profession with legislators and staffers on Capitol Hill. You will also have the opportunity to meet veterinarian currently serving in a variety of roles for the United States Government. As a veterinary student, you spend a lot of time on the details. This externship will help you gain a better understanding of the bigger picture. The AVMA is offering a $1000 stipend for the calendar year for up to 10 veterinary student externs.

USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service Veterinary Student Summer Internship

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is a regulatory public health agency of the USDA. Our mission is to protect consumers by ensuring that meat, poultry, and processed egg products are safe, wholesome, unadulterated, and properly labeled and package. This program provides an internship experience that is directly related to the student’s educational program and career goals. We have developed this program to provide students with a valuable career-related work experience in our public health agency. Students will spend 6 to 10 weeks during the summer working directly with FSIS Public Health Veterinarians to learn what our in plant PHV’s do to ensure the meat and poultry products that reach the consuming public are safe, wholesome and correctly labels.
