Fall Orientation

Iowa State University
College of Veterinary Medicine
May 16, 2013
Dear Incoming First Year Veterinary Students,
On behalf of the Iowa State University Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association, I would like to congratulate and welcome you to the College of Veterinary Medicine. The next four years will be incredibly challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. You are about to enter an amazing program and career. I am pleased to welcome you to the Class of 2017.
The Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA) is an extremely active organization that represents veterinary students and their interests both locally and nationally. We strive to enhance your veterinary education through opportunities at Iowa State and beyond. I encourage you, as a student of the College of Veterinary Medicine, to become an active member of our SCAVMA chapter.
In an effort to prepare you for the beginning of your Veterinary education at Iowa State, SCAVMA is co-sponsoring, with the college administration, an orientation program that is required for first-year students.  Required orientation will take place Wednesday, August 21st – Friday, August 23rd, 2013 at the College of Veterinary Medicine. This program will introduce you to the SCAVMA chapter and its activities, the College administration and faculty, and the many other organizations that are active at Iowa State.  Most importantly it will help you start your life as a veterinary student. You will take care of some “housekeeping” details, including receiving your Iowa State ID card, locker assignments, mailboxes, and anatomy laboratory groups.  You will also have the opportunity to receive your required laptop and learn how it can enhance your education.  Employees from the SCAVMA Bookstore will be available to distribute textbooks and supplies. This program will be packed with valuable information so put this mandatory event on your calendar today. Plus, we’ll have some fun along the way!  On Thursday evening there will be a picnic to allow you to mingle with classmates, students, and faculty.  Parents, spouses, children, and significant others are encouraged to attend this picnic.
Congratulations again on being chosen as a member of the Class of 2017!  We hope you are looking forward to a challenging and fun four years at Iowa State.  If we can help you in any way or answer any questions before school begins, please feel free to contact us.  A tentative agenda for Fall Orientation is on the Class of 2017 website. Enjoy the rest of the summer and we’ll see you August 21st!
Joe Darrington, VM3
SCAVMA President
