Vet Med Open House

Our Veterinary Medicine Open House is an annual event hosted by the students at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The state of Iowa is home to one of 28 veterinary colleges in the United States. The Open House is a unique opportunity for the public to learn more about the veterinary profession and the college. So, plan to visit us on Saturday, April 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All activities are for adults and children of all ages!

Some of the special activities this year include:

 

Petting Zoo - Come see live animals such as farm animals, dogs, rabbits, mini-horse and more.  

Teddy Bear Clinic - Bring your stuffed animal so it can be examined by our Bear Care Doctors, where they will receive much needed TLC!                          

Exotic Animal Expo - See reptiles, iguanas, geckos, birds, and more.

Dress like a surgeon - Put on scrubs, hat, and surgical mask

CPR Station

Dog Bite Prevention - Learn how to approach a dog safely, and the learn the warning signs to help prevent being biten by a dog.

Neuroscience is Fun - Members of the Ames, Iowa Chapter for the Society for Neuroscience will have fun brain-related presentations and games for Open House visitors. Activities include brain coloring for young children, an egg drop (for children of all ages), brain specimens, and other brain-related games. 

Prospective Student Seminar - Informational session for preveterinary students and advisors which explains the admissions process and how to develop a competitive application. Click for more information.

Tours of the college and hospitals - Take a tour of the college and see our newly remodeled Small Animal Hospital and also tour the Large Animal Hospital that opened in 2008. 

Mobile Veterinary Truck - Take a close-up look at one of our veterinary trucks that our veterinarians use to go on farm calls. It's a rare glimpse of a very important part of on-farm calls. It's also one cool truck!
