The City of Independence is seeking applications for a Public Health Veterinarian with a passion for improving the lives of animals, a high level of energy, and a desire to be involved in the community. The City is preparing to open a new 27,260 square foot, state-of-the-art animal shelter in late September/early October 2012. It is anticipated that approximately 5,000 dogs and cats per year will be housed at the facility. The City’s goal is to work towards maintaining a “no kill” shelter. The Public Health Veterinarian is responsible for the medical health and well being of sheltered animals, including but not limited to sterilization, managing animal health and quarantine issues, and ethics of the shelter medical practice. Directs all veterinary medical care related to shelter animals, implementing practices and protocols related to shelter medicine.
Minimum Qualifications: Must be currently licensed or able to obtain a license in the State of Missouri to practice veterinary medicine. Must hold a current DEA license and provide own policy for malpractice insurance. Must possess good surgical skills and enjoy a heavy surgical schedule. Preferred experience in Shelter Medicine (2-4 years). Experience in basic staff management and the appropriate methods and means of dealing with human behavior situations in a variety of business circumstances. Ability to communicate effectively. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Physical Demands: Strength and agility sufficient to occasionally lift and maneuver up to 100 lbs. with reasonable accommodations. Standing on feet for up to 8 hours per day. Typical Working Conditions: Work is performed in a clinic/shelter setting. Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in kennel areas. Exposure to high noise levels when in kennel area. Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament and under the effects of anesthesia.
