Job Description
The Spring Point Project (SPP) Director of Veterinary Medicine (D of VM) is
responsible for veterinary oversight of SPP’s Source Animal Facility (SAF) swine
herd in New Richmond, WI and potential future sites. The D of VM is responsible for
compliance with federal, state, and local policies and procedures regulating the care
and use of animals and represents the company regarding animal care related
issues. The D of VM is the attending veterinarian of the Institutional Animal Care and
Use Committee (IACUC), and maintains the SAF USDA licensure and AAALAC
accreditation. The D of VM provides herd veterinary care including medical, herd
health, biosecurity, and surgical services. The D of VM performs strategic planning
and implementation of health maintenance in the breeding program. The D of VM
also provides medical and surgical services for experimental procedures and
protocols. The D of VM coordinates duties and responsibilities with the Director of
Animal Facilities, and liaises with the Spring Point Project Safety Advisory Board and
other expert consultants.
Essential Functions
• Responsible for animal care and oversight of the Source Animal Facility in New
Richmond, WI.
• Assures adherence to all federal, state and local regulations and guidelines regarding
animal care and use.
• Maintains AAALAC, and USDA licensure/accreditation. Manages required
registrations and accreditation, assuring federal and accreditation agencies that all
standards and requirements for care and use of laboratory animals at the SAF are
met including, as applicable, annual reports to OLAW-(NIH), USDA and AAALAC.
• Assists in compliance with FDA’s “Final Guidance for Industry: Source Animal,
Product, Preclinical and Clinical Issues Concerning the Use of Xenotransplantation
Products in Human” and with the PHS “Guidelines on Infectious Disease Issues in
Xenotransplantation.”
• Assures proper and humane care and handling of all animals housed at the SAF.
• Provides veterinary care, surgical and diagnostic services for all animals housed at
the SAF, including a sentinel program, animals with health problems, pre and postoperative
patients, nursery patients, quarantine program and necropsy services.
• Provides pathology services; performing and evaluating scheduled and unscheduled
diagnostics of necropsy, serologic and bacteriologic sample collection for the sentinel
program to maintain the designated pathogen free status of the herd.
• Provides euthanasia services assuring compliance with the AVMA’s Panel for
Euthanasia report guidelines.
• Maintains appropriate biosecurity monitoring and contingency programs.
• Establishes, reviews, and updates SOPs for the SAF.
• Assists in planning for construction and/or improvement of animal housing and
veterinary/surgical facilities at the SAF.
• Provides professional consultation to users of animals at the SAF.
• Develops and implements SAF policies on animal care and use with approval of the
IACUC.
• Acts as attending veterinarian for the IACUC; reviews all protocols (current and
proposed) involving animal use; coordinates and supervises the maintenance of all
animal study protocols and related animal use records; conducts semi-annual
reviews of all ongoing research protocols involving animal use; prepares for and
participates in the semi-annual inspections of all animal use areas.
• Other duties as assigned.
Secondary Functions
• Stays current on laboratory animal medicine and management, swine health,
nutrition, and infectious disease.
• Monitors regulatory issues regarding xenotransplantation.
Minimum Qualifications
• DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited college of veterinary medicine and
licensed or licensable to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Wisconsin.
• Experience in large animal veterinary medicine, surgery, and husbandry. Veterinary
medicine and surgical experience with swine preferred.
• Experience in a research setting in a laboratory animal related position, preferably in
an AAALAC accredited facility.
Position Details
• Part-time contractor or employee preferred. Full time optional with additional duties.
0.6 FTE part time --full time exempt position offers benefits.
• Salary commensurate with experience.
• Reports to Spring Point Project Executive Director.
• Primary Job Location: New Richmond, WI--near Twin Cities Metro.
• Limited, infrequent travel may be required.
• Due to extreme high herd health the position is contingent upon meeting strict
biosecurity (primarily personal and intimate contact’s swine contact/withdrawal time),
background, and pre-employment health screening requirements. Position Hours: Part Time Base Salary: commensurate w/experience |
