Equine Anesthesia

Equine Anesthesia for the Veterinary Technician

The purpose of this program is to aid veterinary technicians in the area of equine anesthesia. At the completion of the seminar, it is anticipated participants will be able to identify and calculate appropriate anesthetic protocols for both field and in-hospital situations, identify and calculate different sedation protocols as well as have an increased familiarity with common sedatives, calculate and identify appropriate fluid therapy, correctly place and interpret common monitoring equipment, and prepare for a blood transfusion. The wetlab will include an opportunity to place intravenous and intra-arterial catheters for purposes of fluid administration and blood pressure monitoring, connect and interpret normal ECG tracings, refine orotracheal and nasotracheal tube placement, and observe induction and recovery periods. This event has been approved by the Iowa Board of Veterinary Medicine for 8 CE hours.

Debbie A. Coleman, RVT, VTS (Anesthesia)

Debbie Coleman graduated from the Animal Health Technology program in 1980 from Truman State University in Kirksville, MO. She worked in a two-man mixed animal practice in Paris, MO for 8 years. In the fall of 1987, she joined the anesthesia staff at the Iowa State Veterinary Teaching Hospital and worked as an anesthesia technician until March of 2008.

 

Debbie is currently the Iowa service & sales representative for Vetamac, Inc.She repairs and maintains anesthesia machines for veterinarians in Iowa and the surrounding states.

 

Debbie is a member of NAVTA, VECCS and a charter member of the Academy of Veterinary Technician Anesthetists where she served as President from 2005 to 2006. She has provided lectures to national meetings including WVC, NAVC, ACVIM, AVMA and SWVC.

 

Andrea Dorschner, RVT

Andrea graduated from the veterinary technician program at Kirkwood Community College in 2000. Prior to her current position at Iowa State University, she worked in a small animal clinic for one year. Since 2001, Andrea has been a large animal technician in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. She originally split her time between the Equine Surgery and Medicine departments but now serves as the primary equine medicine technician. She is instrumental in the organization and operation of the Equine Intensive Care Unit and works closely with the faculty on biosecurity issues. She is currently completing requirements for certification in the specialty of Internal Medicine. Her free time is spent training and competing with her dogs and even finds an occasional opportunity to relax.
