New Small Animal Internist Joins Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at ISU

When Dr. Dana LeVine graduated from veterinary school, she didn’t want just to practice a trade; she wanted to help develop the science of veterinary medicine. Now a board-certified veterinary internist, Dr. LeVine will be able to fulfill that goal as an assistant professor in the small animal internal medicine section at the Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State University.

CNN reporter Tom Foreman visited the College of Veterinary Medicine this week for a story on the impact of gender shift in the veterinary profession. Over the past decades, the number of women entering the profession has increased, with entering classes comprising 70 percent or more females.

Mr. Foreman explores the impact of the gender shift on teaching and the profession in the February 7 broadcast of "American Journey," a television segment which looks at broad-range changes in society.

Paralleling trends seen in human life expectancy, pets, too, are living longer. Advancements in veterinary medical care and nutrition have helped move that trend upward. As pets live longer, many owners find themselves managing disease conditions of older pets. Younger pets, too, can experience onset of treatable illnesses. And, many pet owners are willing to accept the responsibility for their pets’ care when the unexpected happens.
