Responding to the current reductions in state budgets, the College of Veterinary Medicine is consolidating its three associate dean positions into two. Dean John U. Thomson announced Monday that Dr. Lisa Nolan and Dr. Eldon Uhlenhopp have accepted new roles in the College, effective March 16, 2009.

“Securing our future is not a spectator sport,” urged Dr. John U. Thomson, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University.

“For a secure future, swine veterinarians must remain a recognized and valued resource for the production of safe, affordable and available pork,” said Dr. Thomson who delivered the Howard Dunne Memorial Lecture at the 2009 annual meeting of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians.

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians Foundation awarded scholarships totaling $25,000 to 15 veterinary students during the AASV annual meeting in Dallas, Texas. Five of the 15 students receiving scholarships were from Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Rodney “Butch” Baker, Ames, Iowa, was installed as the 40th president of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians during the association’s annual meeting in Dallas, Texas, March 10. Dr. Baker is a senior clinician in the Food Supply Veterinary Medicine Unit at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Michael J. Wannemuehler has been named Chair of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine effective March 4, 2009. He has been serving as interim chair and professor since April, 2008 when Dr. Lisa Nolan became Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.

AMES, Iowa -- Two researchers in the Iowa Center for Advanced Neurotoxicology (ICAN) at Iowa State University have received awards totaling more than $4 million from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The awards represent innovative approaches to funding biomedical research in Parkinson's Disease by NINDS.
