    Dr. Lorraine (Johnson) Hoffman retired from her position as Director of Operations at the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory on April 1, 2009. She was professor of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine and served as Section Leader in Bacteriology at the diagnostic laboratory from 1975-2006 at which time she was appointed to the position of Director.

    Dr. DewellUnderstanding the costs of production, such as feed and animal health, is an important step in evaluating programs that help producers save money. “If the producers don’t know how much their production costs are, then they don’t know which areas to target  for savings/cost reductions and once targeted, whether they’ve had an effect on them,” said Dr. Grant Dewell, beef extension veterinarian at Iowa State University.

    Throughout the year, swine producers need to evaluate the animal health status of their swine herds with special attention to feed efficiency and mortality. “Don’t except big gains at one time,” said Dr. Jim McKean, extension veterinarian at Iowa State University. “But making smaller gains add up, especially in tough economic times.”

    Responding to the current reductions in state budgets, the College of Veterinary Medicine is consolidating its three associate dean positions into two.  Dean John U. Thomson announced Monday that Dr. Lisa Nolan and Dr. Eldon Uhlenhopp have accepted new roles in the College, effective March 16, 2009.

    “Securing our future is not a spectator sport,” urged Dr. John U. Thomson, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University.

    “For a secure future, swine veterinarians must remain a recognized and valued resource for the production of safe, affordable and available pork,” said Dr. Thomson who delivered the Howard Dunne Memorial Lecture at the 2009 annual meeting of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians.

  • 3/12 ISU Veterinary Students Win Scholarships

    The American Association of Swine Veterinarians Foundation awarded scholarships totaling $25,000 to 15 veterinary students during the AASV annual meeting in Dallas, Texas. Five of the 15 students receiving scholarships were from Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine.

  • 3/10 VMPM Dr. Michael Wannemuehler Named VMPM Chair

    Dr. Michael J. WannemuehlerDr. Michael J. Wannemuehler has been named Chair of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine effective March 4, 2009. He has been serving as interim chair and professor since April, 2008 when Dr. Lisa Nolan became Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.

    Dr. Kent J. Schwartz was honored with the 2009 Howard Dunne Memorial Award by the American Association of Swine Veterinarians. The award, presented at the association’s annual meeting in Dallas, Texas, recognizes an AASV member who has made important contributions and provided outstanding service to the association and the swine industry.
