Letter from Associate Dean Dr. Eldon Uhlenhopp
Dear Students, Alumni, Visitors and Friends,
The Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Office of Outreach and Operations is an exciting center of activity. Our very diverse areas of responsibility include Facilities, Information Technology, Distance Education, International Programs, and the implementation of the Cooperative Program in Veterinary Education with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. We have been taking an active role in developing study abroad programs, new distance education courses and programs, dedicating Phase I of the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center and looking into the future for Phase II of our hospital renovations, and refining administrative and instructional activities with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
In 2008, 24 ISU students and 9 faculty members were mobilized to various institutions in Europe, Canada and Mexico. Students studied various disciplines including pathology, production animal medicine, animal and public health, and cultural influences on health care delivery and public policy. Faculty members were able to enhance existing relationships and create new contacts with faculty and staff at the National Veterinary School of Nantes in France, and at the University of Guadalajara – CUCBA and UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), both in Mexico. Upcoming faculty-led student trips will include two-week studies in France, Mexico, India, Bulgaria and South Africa.
Distance Education is becoming increasingly important in this busy and technologically advanced world of ours, and the College is poised to assume leadership in this field.
October 18th, 2008 marked the dedication of Phase I of the W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. This $48.05 million large animal hospital addition paves the way for an estimated $45.1 million in renovations to our current small animal hospital facility.
Our office is pleased to be positioned at the nexus of innovation, providing increased quality of education for our students, enhanced opportunities for our graduates, and increased services to our public stakeholders. As the oldest land-grant college of veterinary medicine in the United States, we look forward to building upon our heritage through the use of new technologies, advancements in veterinary medical science, and global institutional relationships to ensure that we continue to be relevant to animal and human health needs of an ever-expanding clientele.
As always, thank you for your continued active interest and support,
Eldon K. Uhlenhopp, DVM, MS
Associate Dean for Outreach and Operations
