Tentative Itinerary
Day 1, May 11 - Depart from airport of your choosing
Day 2, May 12 - Arrive in Amman, Jordan - Meet with hosts, drive by vans to Irbid, Jordan to the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST)
Day 3, May 13 - JUST, Irbid
- Breakfast
- Introductions, discussion on the ways and traditions of the people of Jordan
- Lecture/overview on the veterinary school
- Tour of University, veterinary school and hospital. Meet faculty.
- Lunch
- Dr. Ahmad Al-Majali (infectious diseases)
- Lecture on the major infectious and zoonotic diseases in Jordan
- Visit diagnostic laboratories
- Identification of major bacterial zoonosis by both conventional and molecular techniquest
- Dinner
- Stay the night in Irbid
Day 4, May 14 - JUST, Irbid (Friday, University closed)
- Breakfast
- Free time, Tour of the area
- Lunch
- Drive to Um Qais city. Historically known as Gadara, Um Qais is one of Jordan's most unique Greco Roman Decapolis sites.
- Dinner
- Stay the night in Irbid
Day 5, May 15 - JUST, Swaymeh and the Dead Sea - Field work (Saturday, University closed)
- Breakfast
- Dr. Rami Mukbel (Parasitology)
- Drive to Dead Sea
- See the habitat for the sand fly (vector) and the rodent (reservoir). Meet with infected people in the village and see additional cases.
- Place sand fly traps to collect sand flies.
- Lunch
- Tour of the area. Free time. Swim in the Dead Sea
- Dinner
- Stay the night at the Dead Sea
Day 6, May 16 - Swaymeh and the Dead Sea
- Breakfast
- Drive back to JUST
- Lab work: Dissecting the sand fly
- Lunch
- Work on tissue samples infected with hydated cysts from the slaughter house
- Dinner
- Stay the night in Irbid
Day 7, May 17 - JUST, Irbid
- Breakfast
- Lectures on major parasitic diseases of humans & animals
- Meeting: Faculty from vet school and from medical school interested in Public Health
- Overview of Public Health in Jordan
- Discussion/lectures on public health topics of importance
- Discussion of major human health issues, e.g. HIV/AIDS, vaccination rates, environmental health concerns, reportable diseases in people
- Lunch on own
- Lecture on milk safety, regulations, processing, and Public Health
- Lecture on meat safety, regulations, and Public Health
- Dinner on own
- Stay the night in Irbid
Day 8, May 18 - Amman
- Breakfast
- Humane center for Animal Welfare
- Discussion on animal shelter demands, adoption, diseases, and welfare
- Meet with staff of Humane Center for Animal Welfare
- Lunch
- Tour the Humane Center
- Tour in Amman & drive to Irbid
- Stay the night in Irbid
Day 9, May 19 - Amman
- Visit the Department of Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture
- Meet with the local government public health workers and epidemiologists
- Visit the major laboratory facilities that belong to the Ministry of Agriculture
- Drive to Jerash, one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world outside Italy.
- Dinner in Jerash
- Drive back to Irbid and stay the night
Day 10, May 20 - Petra
- Cultural site visits
- Meals together as a group
- Stay the night in Petra
Day 11, May 21 - Petra
- Visit the Brook Equine Clinic
- Tour the area - Wadi Rum
- Drive back to Irbid and stay the night
Day 12, May 22 - JUST
- Discussion regarding small animal and large animal medicine, case load, demand for veterinarians and veterinary services (meet with Director of hospital)
- Meet with students
- Lunch
- Water treatment plant tour
- Discussion of technique, distribution, demand for water
- Free time
- Stay the night in Irbid
Day 13, May 23 - Amman & Jerash
- Breakfast
- Meet some veterinary students from JUST. Discussion of the vet program of study
- Lecture on disease surveillance that is followed in Jordan (avian flu, etc.)
- Disease reporting procedures, disease eradication discussion
- Lunch
- Visit small ruminant farms - discussion of farms
- Dinner
- Stay the night in Irbid
Day 14, May 24 - Irbid & El-Ramtha
- Breakfast
- Drive to El-Ramtha
- Large animal abbatoir - Camel's meat importance, slaughtering, S. aureus pathogens (or sheep, goat, and cattle abattoir in Amman)
- Lunch
- Free time for discussion
- Dinner
- Stay the night in Irbid
Day 15, May 25 - Irbid & Al-Jazeera Plant - Mufraak
- Breakfast
- Drive to Al-Jazeera Plant - Mufraak
- Poutry abattoir - Slaughtering, processing and marketing as well as common infections - Antimicrobial Residues
- Lunch
- Free time for discussion
- Dinner
- Stay the night in Irbid
Day 16, May 26 - Irbid & Hammoda plant at El-Dhlel
- Breakfast
- Drive to Hammoda plat at El-Dhlel
- Dr. Akram Alaboudi
- Dairy farm and Cheese plant tours - Antibiotic residues in milk
- Lunch
- Free time for discussion
- Early farewell dinner
- Stay the night in Irbid
Day 17, May 27 - Depart Jordan in the morning and arrive in Des Moines (or airport of your choosing) in the late evening
