Racing Chemistry Services


The Iowa State University Racing Chemistry Laboratory (ISU RC) has provided testing and research services to the pari-mutuel industry continuously since 1986. The ISU RC is a section under the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory within the College of Veterinary Medicine. The University is a state and federally funded institution.

The lab currently serves The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (1986 – present), The Trinidad/Tobago Racing Commission (2006-present), The New Mexico Racing Commission (2007- present), and The Virginia Racing Commission (2006-present). Our lab has also served many other jurisdictional authorities through the years, including the racing commissions of California, Connecticut, Kansas, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.

We offer an excellent drug-testing program. Our central philosophy is to offer superb technical testing and exceptional customer service. We provide the detection of drugs and drug metabolites within our technical abilities, perform legal confirmations of detected drug agents beyond any reasonable doubt, and expeditiously report all findings to Virginia Racing Commission. ISU RC is committed to investigating new or difficult drugs and is continuously assessing methods to ensure our instrumental analysis offers leading edge technology in drug detection and confirmation.

We offer a depth of experience:

  • The only Racing Laboratory in the United States with a board-certified Veterinary Pharmacologist on staff.
  • An experienced Ph.D chemist provides LC/MS and method development expertise

  • Various staff are active members in AORC, SQA, and AAVLD
