Academics

Graduate Programs

The graduate program of the Department focuses on two major areas: residency training in preparation for board certification, and research training at the Master's level.  The department offers the Master of Science degree with a major in Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Surgery, or Theriogenology.

Professional Courses

The professional program at Iowa State University is fully accredited by the Council of Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association, which accredits veterinary programs in North America.

Residencies

Residency training to the level of Board Certification is available.  Our residency/internship program is offered through the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians Matching Program. Our one-year internship programs are in Equine Medicine and Small Animal Internal Medicine.

ECFVG - CPE Instructional Program

This program is offered for individuals to prepare for the Clinical Proficiency Exam (CPE) to fulfill the requirement for the ECFVG (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates) certification program through the American Veterinary Medical Association. Successful applicants will rotate through approximately 28 weeks of supervised clinical rotations at the Iowa State University Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences/Veterinary Medical Center. While no formal grades or University credit is awarded, participants are evaluated at the end of each rotation and continued participation is dependent upon satisfactory performance in each rotation.

PAVE Program

The PAVE Program is designed to fulfill the licensing requirements of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). Please note that the following jurisdictions will accept PAVE as meeting the educational component of licensure requirements: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virgin Islands, Virginia.
