Preceptorship Checklist
Completing these activities is critical to success in preceptorship activities. These items correspond with links and content on the Blackboard Learn site for this course.
Preceptorship Enrollment and Mentor Selection (Steps 1-3)
1. Formal Enrollment: Student enrolls with Academic Services for VDPAM Production Animal, VDPAM 479 Swine, VDPAM 482 Beef or VPDAM 485 Dairy Preceptorship.
Utilze the E*Value online scheduling system or contact Mindy Schminke schminke@iastate.edu in the OASA office.
2. Meet with Course Coordinator: Student schedules a meeting with the appropriate Course Instructor to identify objectives, locate appropriate location and review course expectations.
3. Contact Potential Mentor: Course Instructor confirms Mentor is willing to schedule a preceptorship for the proposed dates and reviews expectations.
4. Review Syllabus: Assuming Mentor is willing, Course Instructor enrolls student in the corresponding Blackboard Learn course. Student accesses the Blackboard Learn modules and reviews the course syllabus.
5. Update Calendar: Student adds preceptorship dates to the online Course Calendar. (See tutorial on Blackboard Learn.)
6. Preceptorship Planning Assessment: Student completes this assessment on Blackboard Learn. Students will need contact information for the Preceptorship Mentor and themselves during the preceptorship in addition to general travel and insurance plans.
7. What skills do you want to acquire?: Student completes this activity BEFORE attending the preceptorship. (Located and submitted on Blackboard Learn)
8. Case Report Assignment: Student finds an interesting case early in the preceptorship focused on production animal species. This assignment is due after the preceptorship and before a grade can be assigned.
9. What skills DID you acquire?: Student completes this activity at the end of the preceptorship. The student's is determined in part by from this list. Tracking activities as you go may be beneficial.
10. Mentor Evaluation Letter: Student constructs an evaluation letter and leaves it with the mentor when leaving the preceptorship.
Post Preceptorship Completion (Steps 11-12)
11. Post Preceptorship Meeting with Course Instructor: Once the Mentor Evaluation letter is received, student meets with the Course Instructor for a brief exit interview to discuss evaluations and provide feedback to the student.
12. Course Instructor assigns grade: Once all documents have been reviewed, a grade will be assigned and will appear on the student's permanent record.
