 Dr. Hedlund

Cheryl Hedlund DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVS



Dr. Hedlund has returned to Iowa State University, her alma mater, and joined the Small Animal Surgery Department. She is world renown and has written numerous books, book chapters, and manuscripts on small animal surgery. Her special clinical interests in upper respiratory tract surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, surgical oncology, wound management and reconstruction.



Louisa Ho-Eckart BVSc Hons MS

Assistant Professor


Dr. Ho-Eckart is our newest faculty member to join our Small Animal Surgery team.  Dr. Ho-Eckart has recently completed her Small Animal Surgery residency at Oregon State University where she also received her MS in Veterinary Science.   She is a 2004 graduate of the University of Sydney. Her interests include minimally invasive surgery and cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.






Dr. Eric Zellner

Dr. Zellner is in his third year of surgical training after completing his internship here at Iowa State University. He is originally from Michigan and graduated from Michigan State University. He has combined his enthusiasm for sports and helping animals by maintaining involvement in the ISU IronDog Fund. Dr. Zellner is in his third year of surgical training.




Dr. Scott Christopher

Dr. Christopher grew up in Toms River, NJ and completed his veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania. Following graduation he completed a small animal rotating internship at the University of Missouri. This was followed by a fellowship and practicing canine physical rehabilitation at Veterinary Orthopedic and Sports Medicine in Maryland followed by a surgical internship in the Philadelphia area. From there Dr. Christopher completed a research fellowship at the University of Florida in the Comparative Biomechanics laboratory.   His primary interests lie in orthopedic disease treatment and physical rehabilitation. Dr. Christopher is married to a fellow small animal veterinarian and the proud father of two wonderful children and four dogs. Dr. Christopher is in his second year of surgical training.



Dr. Jaron Naiman

Dr. Jaron Naiman grew up in sunny southern California and obtained his undergraduate degree in biology at UCLA. He attended veterinary school at the University of California Davis, and he just finished a Small Animal Rotating internship at Animal Specialty Group in Los Angeles. Dr. Naiman is interested in the application of minimally invasive surgical treatments for small animal patients. Dr. Naiman is in his first year of surgical training.




Amy Dennis


Amy grew up in Granger, Iowa, she graduated from Iowa State University in 2006 with a BA in Advertising and a minor in Spanish. After working in Kansas City for a few years, she left the marketing world and returned to school to pursue a much more fitting career as a Veterinary Technician, graduating from DMACC in 2012. Amy enjoys riding horses and playing at the lake with her lab Rylea.


Amelia Dohlman

 Amelia grew up in the hills of NE Iowa and knew from a very early age that she would end up working with animals. She graduated from Kirkwood Community College in 2005 and began her veterinary technician career at Iowa State in the Orthopedic Surgery Service. In 2012 Amelia changed gears somewhat and is now working with the Surgery and Anesthesia services as a Program Coordinator. Amelia and her husband live in Ames, love the Cyclones and stay busy with Stella, a Golden Retriever, Murphy, a wild Wheaten Terrier and two cats who go by Stu and Lou.


Diane Perry


Diane Perry received certification as a veterinary technician from the University of Minnesota, Waseca in 1984.   She worked for 3 years in private practice in the Des Moines area before joining the surgery department at Iowa State University in 1987.  Diane currently enjoys working in the Sophomore and Junior teaching labs during the school year and assisting the surgery department during the summer months. When not working, Diane enjoys spending time with her family and 2 Brittanys, doing almost any kind of outdoor activity.

Rachael Rail

Rachael grew up in a small town in Southeast Iowa, and graduated with two degrees from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. She has worked with the surgery and anesthesia department at Iowa State University since 2007 and has gained a tremendous amount of knowledge and skill since starting her career in Ames. She enjoys spending time with her family and their bouncy golden retriever, Penny and would someday like to own chickens and ducks!


Cindy Wooledge

Cindy grew up on a farm in Southeast Nebraska. She graduated in 2003 with an A.A.S in Veterinary Technology from Vatterott in Omaha, NE. After graduation Cindy worked in a small animal practice in Lincoln until joining our team at ISU in December of 2003. She has experience in small animal Internal Medicine and Surgery.  Her interests are wound care and infectious disease. Cindy enjoys spending time with her family and their three rambunctious feline friends; Innova, Storm, and Rex.
