Who We Are


 Dr. Hedlund

Cheryl Hedlund DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVS



Dr. Hedlund has returned to Iowa State University, her alma mater, and joined the Small Animal Surgery Department. She is world renown and has written numerous books, book chapters, and manuscripts on small animal surgery. Her special clinical interests in upper respiratory tract surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, surgical oncology, wound management and reconstruction.



Dr. Krebs

Ingar Krebs DVM

Assistant Professor


Dr. Krebs began a faculty position at ISU in July 2010. He immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1997 and received his DVM degree from Colorado State University in 2004. He then completed an internship at the University of Illinois, followed by 2 years in general small animal practice in Arkansas. Dr. Krebs completed a small animal surgical residency at ISU in 2010. He has a special interest in oncologic and minimally invasive surgery.







Dr. Nina Kieves


Dr. Kieves is in her third year of surgical training. After completing her DVM at the University of Minnesota, she continued on as a rotating small animal intern. Following her time at Minnesota, she completed a surgical internship at Veterinary Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Group in Maryland. Outside of veterinary medicine she can be found on the ice rink playing hockey, or spending time with her husband outdoors hiking, biking, and hunting.



Dr. Andrew Burton

Dr. Burton is in his second year of surgical training.




Dr. Eric Zellner

Dr. Zellner is in his first year of surgical training.










Tara Akers


Tara grew up in Ames and has lived here most of her life. She received a AAS degree in Veterinary Technology from Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny, IA in 2006. After graduation, she worked in a small animal practice and became the head technician. She worked there for almost 5 years prior to joining the ISU LVMC. She enjoys doing yard work, being outdoors, reading, and spending time with her daughters.


Amy Dennis


Amy grew up in Granger, Iowa, she graduated from Iowa State University in 2006 with a BA in Advertising and a minor in Spanish. After working in Kansas City for a few years, she left the marketing world and returned to school to pursue a much more fitting career as a Veterinary Technician, graduating from DMACC in 2012. Amy loves being outdoors and has a beloved shelter-rescued lab mix named Rylea.




Diane Perry


Diane Perry received certification as a veterinary technician from the University of Minnesota, Waseca in 1984.   She worked for 3 years in private practice in the Des Moines area before joining the surgery department at Iowa State University in 1987.  Diane currently enjoys working in the Sophomore and Junior teaching labs during the school year and assisting the surgery department during the summer months. When not working, Diane enjoys spending time with her family and 2 Brittanys, doing almost any kind of outdoor activity.
