Dr. Yuko Sato, associate professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has received Iowa State University’s Marvin A. Pomerantz Award for Faculty Enrichment.
An Iowa State faculty member since 2015, Sato serves as a poultry extension veterinarian and diagnostician. In this role, she provides case coordination of diagnostic submissions from poultry and other avian species from across the country.
Sato’s expertise is critical to the U.S. poultry industry and to Iowa in particular, which is the largest egg producing state and is number seven in turkey production. Her contributions to refining the industry’s understanding of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and other emerging and re-emerging poultry diseases have had a significant impact.
During her time at Iowa State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Sato has built a substantial and successful research program. She has been awarded seven Iowa Livestock Health Advisory Council (ILHAC) research funding seed grants to study emerging and re-emerging poultry diseases. The ILHAC funding has resulted in an additional $1.755 million in research funding from external sources.
Sato received her DVM in 2012 from Purdue University. A diplomate of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians, she is the recipient of several awards including the Phibro Extension Award from the Poultry Science Association and Iowa State’s Early Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice.
The Pomerantz Award recognizes an Iowa State faculty member deemed outstanding in teaching, research and/or outreach.
