Services Provided
At the Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital, the Dermatology Service evaluates, performs diagnostics and manages skin and ear diseases in all species of animals. The wide variety of diseases the service sees include infections, parasites, allergies, autoimmune and neoplasia.
The service sees between 25 and 40 cases a week in addition to hospital consultations from other services. Typically, the clinicians and residents evaluate companion animals like dogs and cats but will work with any species including horses, cattle, sheep, goats and exotic species.
The most common case the service sees is a dog that is excessively itching due to underlying allergies with secondary bacterial and yeast infections of the skin and ears.
Appointments
Appointments to the Dermatology Service are typically three to four weeks out. Clients needing to be seen sooner should go to their primary veterinarian and request a referral. The service will also consult with the referring veterinarian prior to the scheduled appointment.
Highly Unusual
This past year, the Dermatology Service treated a middle-aged cat with follicular cysts spread throughout almost all its body. More common in dogs, this is a rare condition in cats. The cat is currently under treatment to decrease or resolve the cysts.
