{"id":8347,"date":"2026-03-06T14:58:27","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T20:58:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/article\/?page_id=8347"},"modified":"2026-03-06T15:12:20","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T21:12:20","slug":"cvm-faculty-receive-aasvf-research-funding","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/article\/cvm-faculty-receive-aasvf-research-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"VDPAM Researchers Receive AASVF Funding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--text-html\">\n\t<div class=\"text-content\">\n\t\t<p><strong>March 6, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two researchers in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine have received funding from the American Association of Swine Veterinarians Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8348 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/Almeida_Marcelo_1224_HR-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Marcelo Aleida\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/Almeida_Marcelo_1224_HR-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/Almeida_Marcelo_1224_HR.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Marcelo Almeida<\/strong>, assistant professor, was awarded funding for two research projects. His proposal, &#8220;Genomic and Epidemiological Characterization of\u00a0<em>Pasteurella Multocida\u00a0<\/em>from Diagnostic Swine Cases and its Relationship with Co-infections, Lesion Patterns and Animal Age,&#8221; was funded at $35,000. The study aims to fully characterize <em>Pasteurella multocida\u00a0<\/em>isolates obtained at the Iowa State and University of Minnesota diagnostic laboratories from various clinical presentations using whole-genome sequencing and comparative genome analyses.<\/p>\n<p>Almeida will received $24,795 to fund his second proposal, &#8220;Retained Piglets in Sows: Testing the Roles of Ionized Calcium and Maternal Anemia in Uterine Fatigue and Farrowing Failure.&#8221; The goal of this investigation is to quantify the association between pre-farrow ionized calcium and hemoglobin levels and the occurrence of prolonged farrowing and piglet retention.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8349\" src=\"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/Silva_Ana-Paula_DSC_4383-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ana Paula Silva\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/Silva_Ana-Paula_DSC_4383-256x300.jpg 256w, https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/Silva_Ana-Paula_DSC_4383-873x1024.jpg 873w, https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/Silva_Ana-Paula_DSC_4383-768x900.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/Silva_Ana-Paula_DSC_4383-1310x1536.jpg 1310w, https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/Silva_Ana-Paula_DSC_4383-1747x2048.jpg 1747w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/>Dr. Ana Paula Poeta Silva<\/strong>, research scientist II, received funding of $33,791 for her project &#8220;Economic and Epidemiologic Decision Trade-offs for PRRS Outbreaks Response Plans in Breeding Herds: Pursuing Stability vs Pre-Outbreak Production Targets.&#8221; The overarching goal of the project is to generate robust, evidence-based data-results into the epidemiologic and economic value of PRRS stability versus pre-outbreak production recovery strategies.
