Scholarships

College of Veterinary Medicine scholarships are presented to students based on financial need, academic achievement, field of interest, or other criteria.  

All Creatures Great and Small Veterinary Scholarship - $1,100
Established by Dr. Gary Friederich to help support a hard working student who shows great promise in the profession.

Jeanne and David Allbaugh Veterinary Scholarship for Academic Excellence - $2,200
Established by Jeanne and David Allbaugh in 2017 to honor their daughter, Dr. Rachel Allbaugh. The scholarship is to help recruit and support an Iowa high school graduate with high academics and great potential.

Dr. Lee Allenstein Scholarship in Bovine Medicine - $925
Established in 1998 by Gene and Muriel Zinn. Awarded to students with a primary interest in production animal medicine and based on leadership and academic potential.

Beverley G. Anderson Scholarship - $2,000
Established in 2014 by Beverley G. Anderson to help support veterinary medicine students interested in food animal medicine.

Willis and Delores Armbrust Veterinary Medicine Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2008 by Scott and Nancy Armbrust. Given to a Nebraska student participating in the ISU-UNL Cooperative Program. Based on achievement and interest in bovine production medicine.

Tyrone D. Artz, M.D. Iowa Scholarship - $4,000 to $6,500
Established in 2017 by the estate of Tyrone D. Artz, MD to help support Iowa high school graduates entering the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Tyrone D. Artz, M.D. Scholarship - $5,000 to $10,000
Established in 2017 by the estate of Tyrone D. Artz, MD to help support students entering the College of Veterinary Medicine with first preference to residents of Kansas and second preference to Iowa high school graduates.

William W. Bailey Scholarship Fund - $14,000
Established in 1997. Based on merit and demonstrated financial need.

William G. Bauman Scholarship - $4,500
Established in 1991 in memory of the Baumans (ISU ‘40) of Barrington, Illinois. Based on high ethical standards, leadership, primary interest in bovine or equine medicine and surgery, academic performance and recommendations of clinical faculty.

Stan Benbrook Scholarship - $1,100
Established in 2014 by Stan C. Benbrook to support students in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

William and Elise Brett Veterinary Medicine Scholarship - $6,000
Established in 2014 by the Elise A. Brett Trust. Given to a student pursuing the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

Wayne W. Brown, DVM and Doris B. Brown Memorial Scholarship - $3,000
Established in 2017 by the family and friends of Wayne W. Brown, DVM, to memorialize his outstanding career and dedication to the field of veterinary medicine. It is awarded to a student with an interest in mixed animal veterinary medicine.

Kenneth L. Bullis Scholarship for Excellence - $2,500
Established in 1983 by Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth L. Bullis (ISU ’28). Based on academic achievement and interest in avian medicine, particularly pet birds.

Robert Buzzetti Veterinary Scholarship Fund - $1,800
Established in 1998 by Dr. Robert C. Buzzetti. Awarded to a male student in his second, third, or fourth year in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Based on special achievement in small animal medicine.

George W. Catt – Vet Med - $500
Established in 1947 to help allow for participation in worthwhile activities. Based on scholarship.

H. L. Chatterton Scholarship - $750
Established in 1981 by Hilah M. Chatterton Wolf in memory of her father, Dr. H. L. Chatterton (ISU 1886). Based on leadership and competence.

Janice M. Clark Memorial Scholarship - $100
Established in 1981. Based on interest in the care of small animals. Preference given to Iowa residents.

Class of 1961/Merrill B. Anderson Scholarship Fund 
Established by classmates (Class of 1961) of Merrill B. Anderson in 2004. Preference given to married students.

College of Veterinary Medicine Mentoring Scholarship - $2,250
This scholarship was established in 2014 to honor Dr. Beenken and other practicing veterinarians who serve an important role as mentors and give students the ability to explore the veterinary profession and gain hands-on experience.

College of Veterinary Medicine Scholarships Fund Financial Need Award - $1,000
Established in 1999 by annual, unrestricted gifts to the college’s general scholarship fund. Awards are presented each year support is provided.

G. W. and Peg Cornwell Scholarship Fund
Established in 1997 by G. W. and Phyllis “Peg” Cornwell. These are awarded to an entering first-year student.

CVM Endowment Fund Academic Excellence Award - $1,000
Established in 1981 by the College of Veterinary Medicine Endowment Fund. Based on exemplary academic performance. Students must have taken all fall semester required courses.

CVM Endowment Fund Financial Need Award - $1,000
Established in 1982 by the College of  Veterinary Medicine Endowment Fund.

CVM Service Award - $1,000
Nominated by classmates on the basis of time and effort in service to their class. Service to SCAVMA, the College of Veterinary Medicine, the profession and the community are also considered.

George and Bonnie Dennis Family Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 1995 by Dr. and Mrs. George L. Dennis (ISU’68). Awarded to a student who has given his/her time and efforts to better the educational experience or student life at the College of Veterinary Medicine without the intention of gaining any personal returns. Preference is given
to residents of Iowa or Nebraska.

Dr. David and Janet Drees Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $5,938
Established in 2017 to recognize the profession of Dr. Drees, and to support future doctors of veterinary medicine. May be renewed for an additional 3 years providing the student remains in good standing.

Dr. C. A. DeValois Memorial Scholarship - $350
Established in 2002 by Donald DeValois in honor of his father, Dr. C. A. DeValois, to support students with a rural or agricultural background.

Dr. H. Hugh Dukes Award - $8,000
Established in 2006 in the memory of Dr. H. Hugh Dukes, who was considered the Dean of Veterinary Physiologists, and was a worldwide friend of veterinarians. Dr. Dukes was also a noted author and educator, and received his DVM degree from Iowa State College, Division of Veterinary Medicine, in 1918. Given to a student who is active and SAVMA and who demonstrate an interest in a career in research and/or education. Recipients must rank in the top 25th percentile of their class.

William Tillman Dunn Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $8,000
Established in 1995 as the result of the professional contributions made by Dr. Dunn as recognized by Mrs. Homozel Mickel Daniel through her estate. Based on exceptional academic capability, high moral character, exemplary interpersonal and written communication skills, leadership ability and the potential for making a positive impact in the profession after graduation.

Eastern Iowa Veterinary Medicine Association Scholarship Fund - $900
Established in 2000 by the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Association. Awarded to a full-time student from eastern Iowa who demonstrates good professional conduct and good character with an interest in general practice and who is actively engaged in college activities.

The Elfriede Apteker Scholarship - $6,800
Established in 1984 by Mrs. Elfriede Apteker because of her respect for Dr. Gilbert Okey (ISU ‘58), small animal practitioner, Hillside, Illinois. Based on a sincere concern for the welfare of animals.

Floris M. and David R. Ertl Scholarship - $8,000
Established in 2004 by Floris M. and David R. Ertl. Awarded to a student entering their third year of veterinary school.

Excellence in Veterinary Medicine Scholarship - $10,000
Established in 2018 to recruit Iowa residents who excel academically and who show great potential to contribute to the veterinary profession.

Excellence in Veterinary Medicine Scholarship - $20,000
Established in 2018 to recruit students who excel academically and who show great potential to contribute to the veterinary profession.

Roger and Marie Feldman Endowment Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2007 by Dr. Roger G. Feldman and based on strong academic achievement, diverse involvement in academic and non-academic activities and demonstrated leadership ability.

Eric Fleming Memorial Scholarship in Small Animal Medicine - $1,500
Established in 1999 by Dr. Mark W. and Laurel L. Fleming. Based on an interest in small animal medicine, academic achievement, and leadership.

Robert Edwin Gamble, DVM Scholarship - $1,233
Established by Dr. Robert Edwin Gamble, an Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine graduate, to recognize outstanding students in their final year of veterinary studies

Charles Gardner Memorial Scholarship - $2,250
Established in 1992 by Mrs. Mary Ann Gardner, family, friends and colleagues in honor of Dr. Charles Gardner (ISU ‘53). Based on scholarship. Cumulative GPA of 2.80 or above.

G.G. Graham Award Fund - $1,000
Established in 1935 by Dr. G. G. Graham (ISU 1908). Based on scholarship, aptitude and general adaptability in clinical large animal medicine.

Marjorie E. Greene Memorial Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 1990 by attorney, Thomas D. Lonergan and Trustee, Rodney C. Schroeder for the Marjorie E. Greene Estate. Based on integrity and leadership. Preference will be given to veterinary students from Clinton and Shenandoah, Iowa

John and Sally Greve Scholarship - $1,600
Established in 1998 by Dr. John and Sally Greve. Award is given to a non-resident student.

Margaret A. Haines Scholarship in Equine Medicine and Surgery - $8,000
Established by Margaret A Haines to help students receive and better afford an education in equine veterinary medicine and surgery. Recipient should demonstrate financial need and a sincere interest in practicing equine medicine and surgery following graduation.

Dr. Harry M. Halverson Memorial Scholarship - $500
Established in 1989 by Mrs. Edna M. Halverson (BS ISU ’36) in memory of Dr. Harry Halverson (ISU ‘36). Based on scholarship and interest in general practice. Preference to South Dakota students.

John and Carolyn Haupert Veterinary Scholarship - $1,900
Established in 1999 by Dr. John C. and Carolyn Haupert. Award is given to a student from eastern Iowa with an interest in large animal practice.

Dr. Isaac (Ike) E. Hayes Memorial Scholarship - $1,200
Established in 1992 by Dr. R. J. Gibbs (ISU ‘44) and colleagues. Based on integrity and definite interest in mixed animal practice.

Howard T. Hill Swine Medicine Award - $900
Established in 1995 by Dr. Howard T. Hill. Based on interest in pursuing swine medicine as a career.

Steven M. Hopkins, D.V.M. Scholarship - $1,000
This scholarship was established in 2013 by Janice M. Hopkins in memory of her husband, Steven M. Hopkins, DVM, professor of theriogenology in the College of Veterinary Medicine from 1981-2012, in honor of his love of teaching and interacting with his students on a more personal level.

Howes Family Scholarship - $1,500
Established in 2015 by Dr. Edward J. Howes, a 1962 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine. It is based on a focus in large or mixed animal medicine.

Oris P. Idsvoog Memorial Award - $850
Established in 1969 in memory of Oris P. Idsvoog (ISU ‘43). Based on integrity, interest in large animal medicine and surgery, and scholastic aptitude. Residents of North Dakota and Wisconsin are given preference.

Innovation in Veterinary Medicine Scholarship Fund - $25,000
Established in 2018 by Scott and Nancy Armbrust to support a student in the “Top 100” of applicants applying to the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. Renewable for three additional years providing a cumulative GPA of 3 is maintained.

Iowa Farmer Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $1,000
Established in 2015 by a family from the Veterinary Medicine Class of 1966 who wish to support the diagnosis and care delivered to farm animals by supporting training in production animal medicine for veterinary students.

IVMA Foundation Freshman Recruiting Scholarship - $2,000
Established in 2008 by the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association Foundation and is renewable for 3 additional years. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding student who might, without the scholarship, matriculate at another veterinary college.

IVMA Foundation Incoming Freshman Scholarships - $2,000
Established in 2017 by the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association Foundation to help support an Iowa resident incoming freshman in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

IVMA Foundation Sports & Field Day Community Engagement Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2016 by the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association Foundation. The scholarship is based on experience and engagement in each of the following areas: bovine, companion animal, equine and swine.

IVMA Supporting Leadership Scholarships - $500
Established by the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association Foundation. Given to a student who is an officer in a student club or organization and who shows evidence of community involvement – service outside the realm of veterinary medicine.

Established in 2014 and awarded to a student with an interest in large animal medicine and financial need.

Margaret Florence Johnson Memorial Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 1998 by Dr. Rhonda and Clifton “Buck” Johnson in memory of Margaret Florence Johnson. Awarded to a female student with interest in a career in small animal medicine.

Johnson-Stewart Scholarship Fund - $15,000
Established in 2004 by the estate of Ruth M. Stewart. This scholarship may be renewed providing the student remains in good standing.

Patricia A. Kasowski Scholarship Fund for Veterinary Medicine - $3,000
Established in 1997 by Marilyn D. Scholl. Based on merit. This award is renewed annually providing the student remains in good standing.

Leonard Kater Memorial Veterinary Medicine Scholarship Fund - $12,000
Established in 1983 by Mrs. Leonard Kater in memory of her husband, Leonard Kater. The Katers had a great compassion for animals and Mrs. Kater felt that supporting students with that same compassion would be a fitting tribute to her husband. The scholarship is given to a student intending to specialize in small animal medicine and who has a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above

Dr. J. Richard and Linda K. Kennedy Family Veterinary Scholarship - $2,600
Established in 2009 by Dr. J. Richard Kennedy. Based on interest in large animal or production animal medicine. Preference is given to students from eastern Iowa or those who wish to practice in eastern Iowa.

The Krichel Father and Son Scholarship - $2,200
Established in 1982 by Drs. Joseph Krichel, Jr. (ISU ’57) and Joseph Krichel, Sr., (CVC ’16) for students with financial need.

Joe and Isabelle Krichel SCAVMA President Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2009 by Joe and Isabelle Krichel to recognize the importance of volunteer leadership as a student in the profession of veterinary medicine. This scholarship is to benefit the presidents of the Student Chapter of the American
Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Sydney La Rue Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $1,600
Established in 2017 to support students pursuing their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

Arthur B. and Blanche F. Lederer Memorial Scholarship - $900
Established in 2008 by Dr. Herbert A. Lederer (ISU ‘58) in memory of his father and mother. Awarded to a student with an interest in companion animal medicine and who has high moral character as demonstrated by leadership, responsibility, trustworthiness and caring attitude both inside and outside the classroom.

Lemley Memorial Scholarship - $650
Established in 2014. Preference given to an Iowa high school graduate who intends to practice food animal medicine in Iowa after graduation.

Darold A. Lodge Endowment in Veterinary Medicine - $7,000
Established through a bequest from Darold A. Lodge to provide scholarships for students in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Renewable if a cumulative GPA of 3.00 is maintained.

Marie S. Lodge Endowment in Veterinary Medicine - $10,000 to $14,000
Established through a bequest from Marie S. Lodge through the Marie S. Lodge Trust to provide scholarships for students in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Bryan F. Lott Memorial Scholarship Fund - $1,700
Established in 2010 by the Lott family as a tribute to Bryan and his wife Ruth M. Lott who started, and who have given so much to the education of their children and grandchildren. The scholarship is given to an entering fourth-year student who is participating in the Cooperative Program in Veterinary Education with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and who intends to practice in Nebraska following graduation.

Bill McEniry, DVM, Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $1,300
Established in 2017 by Dr. Bill McEniry to help support an Iowan who is pursuing their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

Maggie’s Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $2,100
Established in 2000 by Karen Shaff and Steven Jayne to recognize the wonderful care and support they received from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, for their beloved companion, Maggie. In particular, they wish to mention Dr. Elizabeth Goldman and Dr. Dena Franklin, a third-year student at the time of Maggie’s care. Based on an interest in small animal medicine.

Larry (DVM) and Barbara Mahr One Health Scholarship - $1,900
Established in 2017 by Larry (DVM) and Barbara Mahr for professional program students pursuing a Masters of Public Health or having a demonstrated interest in One Health Initiatives.

Dr. Hugo Medina Scholarship Fund - $1,200
Established in 2013 in memory of Dr. Hugo Medina. First preference is a student interested in poultry medicine and a secondary preference of a student from an underrepresented group.

Dr. Paul J. and Sara. J. Meginnis Scholarship - $5,000
Established in 2014 by Paul Meginnis, II in memory of his parents, Paul J. Meginnis, DVM ‘31, and Sara J. Meginnis. Based on demonstrated interest in equine medicine.

Doris Day/Terry Melcher Endowed Scholarship Fund - $1,950
Established in 2018 by the Doris Day Animal Foundation to support students with an interest in animal welfare and shelter medicine.

Dean I.A. and Iza Merchant Scholarship - $1,500
Established in 1986 by Dr. I. A. Merchant family and friends. Dr. Merchant served as dean of the college from 1952-1963. Based on scholastic competence and good character.

Merck Animal Health Scholarships for Food Animal Veterinary Students - $4,500
Established in 2020 and awarded to a third-year veterinmary medicine student with an interest in food animal medicine.

Robert B. Mericle, D.V.M. Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $2,400
Established in 1999 by Robert B. Mericle, DVM. Based on scholarship and potential for future leadership in veterinary medicine.

Robert A. Merrill Scholarship - Class of 1926 - $1,600
Established in 2009 by Barbara Merrill in honor of her father, Dr. Robert A. Merrill, a graduate in the Class of 1926. Given to a student with an interest in large animal medicine.

Dr. L. Devon Miller Pathology Scholarship - $1,200
Established in 2007 by Dr. James and Julie DeLano in honor of Dr. L. Devon Miller who served not only as Dr. DeLano’s employer but as a mentor in successful qualities of a veterinarian and in valuable life skills. Given to a student who has interest and aptitude in pathology and is actively involved in campus/college activities. Preference given to students who have or are currently working in the Veterinary Pathology Department.

Minard G. Mills Memorial Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $17,500
Established in 1995 by the estate of Isabel M. Mills to aid a student who is pursuing a degree in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Walter and Lucille Murken Scholarships - $1,900
Established in 1999 by the estate of Walter and Lucille Murken. Award is given to students with future leadership potential.

Miles and Helen Nay Scholarship - $4,700
Established in 1997 by Helen Nay. Based on an interest in small animal medicine and surgery and merit, as well as a demonstrated dedication to and  concern for the health and welfare of animals.

Nemeth Veterinary Medicine Award of California - $16,375
Established in 2018 by the Alexander & Eva Nemeth Foundation. Scholarship is given to a California resident who demonstrates a passion for the care of animals, while seeking to establish themselves as a premiere provider of veterinarian services in the community where they will reside after graduation.

Dr. Yosiya Niyo Pathology Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2007 by Dr. James and Julie DeLano in honor of Dr. Yosiya Niyo who served not only as Dr. DeLano’s employer but as a mentor in successful qualities of a veterinarian and in valuable life skills. Given to a student who has or is currently working in the veterinary pathology
department. Based on scholastic aptitude.

Lisa Nolan Servant Leadership Scholarship - $2,000
Established in 2017 by friends and colleagues of Dean Lisa K. Nolan. The scholarship honors Dr. Nolan’s servant style of leadership.

Brian D. Oetjen, D.V.M. and Kathryn Burds Oetjen, D.V.M Scholarship Fund - $2,800
Established in 1997 by friends and family of Brian D. Oetjen, DVM. Based on involvement with campus, community and/or professional activities.

Arthur M. and Margaret E. Orum Trust Scholarship - $900
Established in 1998 by Arthur M. and Margaret Orum. Awarded to a student with a GPA of 2.50 or above.

Dorman Edward Parker Scholarship Endowment - $25,000
Established in 2007 by Donna Parker in memory of her husband, Dorman Edward Parker. Given to a student admitted to the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Frederick Douglass Patterson Scholarship - $10,000
Established in 2018 by the College of Veterinary Medicine to honor the personal merits and attributes of Patterson (DVM’23, MS’27) who served as the president of Tuskegee Institute and is the founder of the United Negro College Fund. Given to a student entering the professional DVM program with preference to underrepresented students. This scholarship may be renewed as long as the student remains in good standing.

Christian Petersen Veterinary Medicine Scholarship - $2,000
Established in 1981 in memory of Christian Petersen, sculptor of the Gentle Doctor statue. Based on academic achievement.

Allen C. Peterson Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $900
Established in 1998 by Agnes S. Peterson in memory of Dr. Allen C. Peterson. Given to a student with a 2.00 GPA average or above.

Robert E. and Doris R. Philbrick Academic Excellence Scholarship - $10,000
Established in 2008 by Robert E. and Doris R. Philbrick. Awarded to a VM3 student with preference given to a married student with children.

Dr. Harvey Price and Corinne Price Scholarship for the Study of Veterinary Medicine - $5,000
Established in 1999 from a bequest of Dr. Harvey Price. Given to a veterinary student who has exhibited artistic talent and abilities regarding creation of anatomical charts, diagrams and drawings to aid in the teaching, study, research and practice of veterinary medicine.

Krista L. Rankin Scholarship - $4,500
Established by N. Lois and Graham M. Rankin to honor the memory of their daughter, Krista L. Rankin, who was a veterinary medicine student at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the time of her death.

F. K. Ramsey Scholarship for Academic Excellence - $1,900
Established by Dr. and Mrs. F. K. Ramsey (ISU ‘46) in 1983. Based on outstanding leadership qualities, academic performance and contributions to the College of Veterinary Medicine and to students.

Dr. Arthur K. Ruebel and Helen Ruebel Endowed Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $1,600
Established in 2005. Awarded to a third-year student from Iowa based on need and scholastic merit. Renewed for the recipient’s fourth year.

Salsbury Endowment Fund for Veterinary Medicine Scholarships - $2,000
Established in 1985 by Dr. John G. Salsbury (ISU ‘40). The award shall be conferred on those senior students demonstrating superior scholarship, initiative, perseverance and potential for leadership.

Juana and Hjalmar Sandberg Scholarship Fund - $1,200
Established in 2013 by family and friends of Juana and Hjalmar Sandberg. Given to a student enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine professional program.

Dr. O.J. Schrag Scholarship - $600
Established in 1989 in memory of Dr. Schrag (ISU ‘26). Awarded to a student with a high degree of integrity and good character. Preference given to residents of South Dakota.

Dr. J. W. Sexton Memorial Scholarship - $4,300
Established in 2007. Based on demonstrated good character and academic success.

Jamie D. Sharp Scholarship - $900
Established in 2014 by Jamie D. Sharp as a thank you to the College of Veterinary Medicine for the outstanding care provided to her pets.

Dr. Doyle W. Simonsen Memorial Scholarship - $2,100
Established in 2017 by the family of Dr. Doyle W. Simonsen, Class of 1940, in memory of their father and to honor his career in the field of veterinary medicine. Awarded to a student pursuing their DVM degree, with a GPA of 2.50 or higher, an interest in production animal medicine, and who is a graduate of an Iowa high school.

Dr. Margaret W. Sloss Memorial Scholarship - $3,600
Established by Dr. and Mrs. John G. Salsbury (ISU ‘40) in 1981 in memory of Dr. Margaret W. Sloss (ISU ‘38). Awarded for outstanding ability and contribution to the College of Veterinary Medicine and students. The award is presented to an undergraduate female student entering the fourth year.

Southwest Iowa Veterinary Medical Association Award - $400
Established in 1995 by the Southwest Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. This award is given to a third- or fourth-year student on the basis of potential and interest in food animal medicine.

Dr. Dennis and Mary Somers Scholarship - $5,000
Established by Dr. Dennis and Mary Somers in 2017. Dr. Dennis Somers earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1972. He enjoyed a successful practice in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He and his wife, Mary, established this scholarship to assist veterinary students further their education at Iowa State.

Established in 1998 by Jerome and Laurine Speltz. Awarded to a student enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine professional program. 

Stange Award Scholarship for Academic Excellence in Veterinary Medicine - $2,700
Established in 1998 by Dr. Melbourne B. Teigland. Based on demonstrated academic performance and future leadership potential.

Dr. Paul F. Starch Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $5,600
Established in 2001 by Carol and Douglas Buol in memory of Carol’s father, Dr. Paul F. Starch (ISU ‘45). Open to students who demonstrate academic achievement, good professional conduct and character, and potential for future leadership.

Dr. James E. Stark Memorial Scholarship - $1,400
Established in 2010 by Mrs. Stark in memory of her husband, Dr. James E. Stark (ISU ‘70). Given to an Iowa resident with interest in companion animal medicine.

Charles D. Steele Memorial Scholarship for Veterinary Medicine - $4,000
Established by Geraldine S. Steele in 1998. Awarded to an Iowa resident with scholastic merit as the primary criteria. This award is renewed providing the student maintains a minimum GPA of 3.00 and are in good standing.

Stein Veterinary Scholarship - $2,900
Established in 2008 by James P. and Tamara J. Stein. Given to a student currently enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine and in good academic standing.

Dr. Allison Sullivan Scholarship - $3,000
This scholarship was established by Peggy Fisher, in honor of Dr. Allison Sullivan for the dedicated professional service Dr. Sullivan rendered to her pets and in memory of her cats, Kiddo and Emily. Given to a third- or fourth-year veterinary student who is in good academic standing and has an interest in pursuing companion animal medicine and surgery.

Dr. Steve Sulsberger Memorial Fund - $1,200
Established in 2015 by Colleen Sulsberger in memory of her husband, Dr. Steve Sulsberger. Preference given to students from the Iowa counties of Monona, Woodbury or Ida and a second preference given to students from western Iowa.

James A. Sweeney ‘64 Endowed Scholarship - $500
Established in 1999 by Dr. James A. Sweeney. Based on financial need, academic achievement and leadership.

Lora and Russ Talbot ISU Alumni Association Cardinal and Gold College of Veterinary Medicine Scholarship - $3,000 to $4,000
Established in 2013 by Lora and Russ Talbot for third-year veterinary students, this scholarship is based on demonstrated financial need, graduation from an Iowa high school, and preference given to first-generation college students. It provides two-year scholarships for two students. Each year a new third-year student will be selected, and the scholarship will be automatically renewed for that student’s fourth year with an increased award, provided minimum standards are maintained.

Russell G. and Lora L. Talbot Scholars in Veterinary Medicine - $8,000
Established in 1998 by Russell G. and Lora L. Talbot, this scholarship program provides four-year scholarships to seven students each year based on a proven record of scholastic achievement with a minimum GPA of 2.8 and demonstrated financial need. The awards are open to graduates of Iowa high schools with first preference given to students who graduated from a high school in Wright County. The awards are renewable, provided minimum standards are maintained.

Uhlenhopp Public Policy Award - $2,000
Established in 1999 by Dr. Eldon and Mrs. Patty Uhlenhopp to recognize one student for his/her accomplishments in informing and influencing public policy and to assist that student in gaining additional significant experience in this field. Based on scholarship, leadership and interest as demonstrated by a written application.

Dr. Roger Van Prooien and Ruth Van Prooien Endowed Scholarship - $4,500
Established in 2014 with proceeds from The Roger Van Prooien and Ruth Van Prooien Charitable Remainder Trust. Dr. Roger Van Prooien received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1958.

Dr. Warren Verploeg Scholarship - $1,000
This scholarship was established by Dr. Warren Verploeg in 2003. The recipient must have good character and must not be receiving any other tuition scholarships.

Veterinary Medicine Class of 1950 Scholarship - $1,200
Established in 2002 to commemorate the camaraderie of the Class of 1950 and their gratitude for the profession and the education they received. Based on good character.

Veterinary Medicine Class of 1953 Scholarship - $2,000
Established by the Class of 1953. The recipient must have good character and must not be receiving any other tuition scholarships.

Veterinary Medicine Class of 1960 Scholarship - $2,200
Established in 2016 to support students enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine with demonstrated financial need.

Veterinary Medicine Class of 1964 Fund - $5,000
Established in 2000. Based on demonstrated leadership qualities, potential for success in veterinary medicine and financial need. Preference given to descendants of class of 1964 members.

Veterinary Medicine Class of 1987 Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2013 by the Veterinary Medicine Class of 1987. Based on interest in large animal medicine. Interest rotates yearly between large animal and small animal focus.

Veterinary Medicine Endowed Scholarship Fund - $1,400
Established in 1981 by the College of Veterinary Medicine. Based on academic performance.

Frank Walsh Memorial Scholarship - $600
Established in 1976 in memory of Dr. Frank Walsh (ISU 1918), former College of Veterinary Medicine faculty member. Based on academic excellence.

Dr. Lyle L. Warden Scholarship - $3,800
Established in 2017 by Dr. Lyle L. Warden to help support professional students in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University.

Dr. Martin Wiernusz Dairy Practitioner Scholarship - $500
Established in 2019 through the IVMA Foundation. Given to a female student in their fourth year of study.

Wilcke Family Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine - $4,000
This scholarship was established in 2015 in honor of Dr. Ken Wilcke. This scholarship supports students interested in practicing clinical veterinary medicine.

Wogahn Scholarship Fund - $2,000
Established in 1997 by Larry A. and Margaret A. Wogahn. Given to an Iowa resident. Based on merit and demonstrated financial need.

Kenneth H. Wulfekuhle DVM Memorial Scholarship - $2,000
Established by the family of Kenneth H. Wulfekuhle, DVM in 2018. The scholarship is given to an Iowa resident with a minimum GPA of 3.00 and who is studying food animal medicine and plans to practice in the Midwest.

Gene and Muriel Zinn Scholarship - $800
Established in 1998 by Gene and Muriel Zinn. Awarded to students with a primary interest in production animal medicine and based on leadership and academic potential.
