Dr. John Scamahorn, chair
Veterinarian & Owner
Animal Medical Clinic, P.C.
Dr. John Scamahorn has been a private clinical practitioner in Greencastle since his graduation from Purdue University in 1972. He owns Animal Medical Clinic, P.C., a mixed animal practice serving clients in West Central Indiana. Over the past 38 years, Dr. Scamahorn has served on numerous Indiana Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) committees and served as a board member, board chairman and president. He has also been active with the AVMA as a member of the House of Delegates. He was the IVMA’s Veterinarian of the Year in 1994 and received Purdue University’s School of Veterinary Medicine’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2001. He is a member of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners.
Dr. Robert Lester

Dr. Robert Lester is a founding member of the Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine leadership team, currently serving as an assistant dean for clinical relations. Prior to joining Lincoln Memorial, Dr. Lester was a vice president for university and professional relations at Mars Inc./Banfield Pet Hospital. He worked at Banfield in a variety of roles from 1994-2013. He was also the owner/operator of a small town Oregon mixed animal practice. Dr. Lester earned his DVM from Oregon State University/Washington State University.
Dr. Vern Otte
Veterinarian, State Line Animal Hospital
A 1975 DVM graduate of Kansas State University, Dr. Vern Otte was the owner of State Line Animal Hospital in Leawood, Kan., from 1977 to 2014 and remains a veterinarian at the clinic. He is extremely active in organized veterinary medicine and served as president of the Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association, the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association and was named the Kansas Veterinarian of the Year in 2000. He was also awarded Kansas State University’s 2015 Alumni Recognition Award. Dr. Otte has also served in the United States Army Reserve in the Army Veterinary Corps for 36 years and has been a trail veterinarian for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race for eight years.
Dr. Roderick Tubbs
Owner, Tubbs Contract Research Organization
Dr. Roderick Tubbs is the owner of Tubbs Contract Research Organization, a company that provides contract research facilities and services to the animal health industry. After graduating from Auburn University in 1983, Dr. Tubbs was a private practitioner in Georgia for two years. Since then, he has earned an MS degree and MBA, served as a swine extension veterinarian at the University of Missouri, and was a partner in a food-animal practice in Kentucky. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists and a past president of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians.
Dr. Jack Wilson, Canadian member

Prior to joining the University of Calgary faculty in 2008, Dr. Jack Wilson owned a general small animal practice in downtown Calgary. He is the chair of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s National Examining Board and a senior professional skills instructor with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Spencer Johnston is the James and Marjorie Waggoner Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and the chair of the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine. A graduate of University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Johnston is a Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. His research interests include the treatment of osteoarthritis, particularly with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Dr. Fern Tablin, observer

School of Veterinary Medicine
University of California-Davis
Dr. Fern Tablin is a faculty member at the University of California-Davis' School of Veterinary Medicine. Her research focuses on platelet physiology and the role of platelets in health and disease, including how exposure to air pollution can result in platelet up-regulation leading to activation, thrombosis and even stroke. She uses biochemical, cell biology and molecular biological techniques to answer these questions.
Dr. Karen Martens Brandt, AVMA staff consultant

Dr. Karen Martens Brandt has been the director of AVMA’s Education and Research Division since 2014. She joined the AVMA staff in 2008. She earned her DVM from the University of Minnesota and previously taught at the University of Minnesota Technical College-Waseca. She also spent several years in dairy and companion animal private practice.
