One Health: Onchocerca - Discovery of microfilaricidal effects of antibiotics, symbiotic Wolbachia and significance for treatment of humans and animals
Dr. Alexander John Trees, Member, British House of Lords
Former president, Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
Dr. Trees will talk about his scientific career, research at the Liverpool Veterinary School in the UK, and his work with cattle on Onchocerca in Africa. This work led to the discovery of the microfilaricidal action of antibiotics and experiments that determined the symbiotic relationship that filaria have with the bacteria Wolbachia. We now understand much more about the significance of this symbiotic relationship, which has led to advances in the treatment of filariasis of humans and animals. He has now entered politics in the UK and will conclude with a few comments about the politics of House of Lords which is historically analogous to the US Senate.
