Monday, January 17 was the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. To keep our community safe during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and OTS have compiled a list of virtual volunteer opportunities!
Virtual Volunteer Opportunities
Food Bank of Iowa Online Donations: ISU CVM has organized a virtual way to participate in our food drive via cash donations to the Food Bank of Iowa!
Free Rice: As you play Freerice and answer questions right, advertisements appear on your screen. When you see one of these advertisements, you trigger a financial payment to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support its work saving and changing lives around the world.
Be My Eyes: This is a free app that “connects blind and low-vision individuals with sighted volunteers and companies from all over the world through live video call.
Charity Miles: This is an app for both iPhone and Android users “that helps you turn all the miles you walk, run and bike anyway into money for charity.
Penguin Watch: Help scientists monitor populations of penguins! This data is used to monitor and understand the impacts of “climate change, pollution, disturbance and competition with fisheries,” and “reverse them through informing policy changes where we can.”
Smithsonian: “‘Digital Volunteers’ can now take on important assignments to expand access to the Smithsonian’s massive collections, and can participate in a variety of research programs.
In-Person Food Drive
Accepting Donations Now-January 21
We will also be accepting in-person donations of both pet and human non-perishable food items for the food drive until January 21.
Individuals may drop off items at one of the three donation locations:
- Gentle Doctor Cafe
- outside the Small Animal ICU
- Large Animal Hospital reception area
Thank you for helping us give back to our community!
