Certificate Requirements

Residency Certificate Requirements

  1. Each resident will present one seminar per year in the Resident Lecture Series. Topics should be selected 3 months in advance. The seminar must be reviewed by at least 2 Small Animal Medicine faculty at least one week prior to presentation.
  2. Each resident must develop 12 teaching cases (reviewed and approved by the resident advisor) to be used in small group learning situations. These 12 cases must be completed during the first half of the residency training program.
  3. The resident must demonstrate competency in medical skills judged appropriate for a resident's level of professional development. The skills checklist is outlined in attachment #2.
  4. The resident must present the results and conclusions of their research investigation to the faculty in a formal atmosphere at a designated time in June of the second or third year of their training program. A manuscript on the project, suitable for publication, must be prepared and submitted to the medicine faculty. Residents are also encouraged to present the results of this research effort at a national meeting such as the annual meeting of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
  5. Each resident must submit one first author manuscript in their second year of their residency and another first or second author publication to a refereed journal during their 3 year program. The purpose of this requirement is to assist the resident in attaining their credentials to sit the certifying examination and to be sure the resident stays on a suitable schedule for timely completion of the requirements to achieve board certification. Medicine residents are also strongly encouraged to publish interesting cases and/or clinical observations in refereed journals in addition to original scientific material.
  6. The Residency Program Coordinator maintains a folder for each resident in his/her office. Residents are responsible for keeping their file current by noting fulfillment of required obligations, updating their curriculum vitae, and providing a copy of all manuscripts submitted for publication. A residency time-table has been developed to help the resident progress through the training program; see attachment #3.
  7. The resident must make a yearly written evaluation of the residency program. This evaluation must be submitted to the Small Animal Medicine Residency Program Coordinator by the end of the second week of June of each completed year.
  8. The resident must complete all clinical rotations, scheduled emergency duties, medical records, and patient discharge letters.
  9. The resident must complete the final checklist and submit this document to the Program Coordinator by the end of the second week of June of the final year of the residency (see attachment #3).

Certificate of Residency

A certificate of successful residency completion will be awarded at the end of the residency only when stipulated requirements are satisfied, and the resident's faculty members have signed the Documentation of Residency Completion form.
