Offering Options to 4th Year CVM Students

Dear VM4 Students,

Since the March 26th announcement cancelling rotations in Blocks 47-52, several students have reached out to me for clarification regarding learning opportunities during the coming weeks. The decision to cancel Blocks 47-52 was made following student requests for additional flexibility during the final 6 blocks, and in recognition of the inherent challenges of offering clinical instruction on-line. While the college wished to provide students with flexibility by removing the hurdles of existing course requirements, we are committed to providing on-line learning activities to any VM4 students who would like to continue studying and learning under the direction of our clinical faculty. Where we have been approached by students seeking such opportunities, we have quickly paired them with educational opportunities that best matched their interests and college resources. This opportunity is available to any current VM4 student. Between now and the end of Spring Semester, instruction is available to interested students in the following areas:

  • Primary Care
  • Cardiology
  • Anesthesia
  • Equine Medicine/Field Services
  • Ophthalmology/Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Equine Surgery
  • Anesthesia
  • Farrier
  • Neurology
  • Pathology/Clinical Pathology
  • Production Animal Medicine

Capacity in specific areas may be limited, but the college is committed to providing meaningful learning activities to all interested students. If you are interested in continued learning opportunities, please let us know, and we will work to pair you with courses and/or faculty mentors per your specific interests and the availability of faculty. Depending on your area of interest, please reach out to the following:

Small/Companion Animal Medicine/Farrier: Dr. Jessica Ward - jward@iastate.edu
Production Animal Medicine: Dr. Pat Halbur - pghalbur@iastate.edu
Pathology: Dr. Amanda Fales-Williams - afales@iastate.edu

Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.

Kind regards,

Jared Danielson, PhD
Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs
