New Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Kristen Deom

Dr. Kristen Deom
Clinical Assistant Professor
Anesthesiology, Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center
Education
DVM, Purdue University
Past Experience
After veterinary school, Dr. Deom completed a small animal rotating internship and small animal surgery specialty internships in private specialty veterinary practices. It was here that she developed a strong interest in surgery and anesthesia. She completed a residency in veterinary anesthesia and analgesia at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center and joined the Iowa State faculty after completing that residency.
Research Area
Dr. Deom studies how certain genetic mutations (MDR1) affect dogs receiving common anesthetic premedications, as well as evaluation of methods to safely reuse anesthetic equipment such as endotracheal tubes in veterinary medicine.
Dr. Deom says…
“My role at Iowa State will heavily involve the anesthesia needs of the community outreach program, which provides wellness care and sterilization surgeries for adoptable pets in central Iowa. This program provides needed care for shelter pets while providing hands-on learning opportunities for students.
“I look forward to working with students in both the classroom and clinical setting to help students translate their classroom knowledge into practical, applicable clinical skills. Many students and even practitioners find anesthesia intimidating and it is my hope to work towards continuing to improve student comfort and competency so that we can provide excellent care for our current patients while developing skills that will ensure that students can continue to be successful once they are in practice.”
