Past Experience
Dr. Dion spent 11 years working in commercial swine production, both as a veterinarian and well-being manager for an integrated swine production system. In that role she provided services to swine farms and producers in multiple states across the United States.
In 2023, Dr. Dion returned to Iowa State as a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine, working on a PhD focused on biosecurity research.
Specialty Area
Dr. Dion’s research focuses on applied swine health and biosecurity. She also specializes in disease outbreak investigations, population medicine, and applied field epidemiology.
Interesting Fact
In her research, Dr. Dion seeks to understand how and why diseases like PRRSV and swine enteric coronaviruses are introduced into swine herds under real-world field conditions. “The goal is to identify practical, data-driven tools to reduce disease risk.”
Dr. Dion says…
“My years in commercial swine production highlighted the challenges producers and veterinarians face when preventing, controlling, and managing diseases under field conditions. Those decisions are shaped by far more than just the pathogens themselves.
“I like the fact that my research and teaching can directly support veterinary students, veterinarians and producers with practical tools and evidence-based solutions that improve animal health, biosecurity and productivity.”
