Last week, the Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) hosted the National Pork Board’s Foreign Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Training Tabletop Exercise with the guidance and help of Dr. Webb, reinforcing the importance of biosecurity and industry-wide preparedness as part of the fourth-year veterinary rotation VDPAM 7478C: Swine Emerging Diseases and Emergency Response Management.
The training brought together swine producers, veterinarians, emergency responders, and industry partners for a collaborative learning experience focused on preventing, detecting, and responding to foreign and transboundary animal disease threats. By convening diverse stakeholders, SMEC continues to advance the swine industry through education that strengthens coordinated response efforts and highlights the critical role of biosecurity in protecting animal health.
In addition to supporting industry readiness, the exercise provided future swine veterinarians with hands-on exposure to real-world disease response scenarios. Participants gained valuable insight into emerging disease risks, emergency management strategies, and the decision-making processes required during a biosecurity event.
SMEC remains committed to supporting the swine industry by offering learning opportunities that build resilience, enhance preparedness, and equip both current professionals and the next generation of veterinarians to respond effectively to disease emergencies.
