VDL, SMEC Presented 2026 Teamwork Award
The College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and Swine Medicine Education Center were awarded the 2026 Teamwork Award at the 36th Annual Swine Conference presented by Carthage Veterinary Service.
The College of Veterinary Medicine was recognized along with Iowa State Veterinarian Dr. Jeff Kaisand for their response to the detection of pseudorabies on a commercial swine farm.
Faced with a disease the U.S. commercial swine industry had not encountered in decades, these teams worked together to quickly diagnose the problem, respond to the affected site and limit the potential impact on the broader pork industry.
Just as important, their work did not end when the immediate response was over. They continue to use lessons from the experience to strengthen preparedness for future animal health challenges.
