Clinical Pathology

The ISU VDL Clinical Pathology section handles a variety of testing from both companion and production food animals. These services include complete blood counts, serum chemistry panels, and urinalysis.

Specimen Requirements

All samples should be sent overnight on ice packs and will be tested in the condition which they are received.

Serum

  • Must be separated and removed from the blood cells immediately after clotting in a red top tube
  • Refrigerate at 36°F–46°F
  • If overnight shipping and testing within 48 hours is not possible, freeze the serum/plasma at 0°F.
  • Please avoid freezing samples used for electrolyte testing.

Whole Blood

  • Should be collected in EDTA tubes at least 1/3 full
  • Refrigerate at 36°F–46°F
  • Avoid freezing samples
