{"id":2829,"date":"2024-05-02T14:12:01","date_gmt":"2024-05-02T14:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/vdl\/?page_id=2829"},"modified":"2024-05-02T14:18:37","modified_gmt":"2024-05-02T14:18:37","slug":"sick-animal-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/vdl\/resources\/pathogens-toxins\/bovine-influenza\/sick-animal-guidelines\/","title":{"rendered":"Sick Animal Guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--text-html\">\n\t<div class=\"text-content\">\n\t\t<h2>Sample Collection Guidelines<\/h2>\n<h3>Ante mortem<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Individual milk samples from 5-10 acutely affected cows (approx. 10ml\/sample, each quarter represented) for IAV PCR<\/li>\n<li>Optional: serum for antibody detection on the IAV NP ELISA (approx. 2-3ml\/sample) and nasal swabs for IAV PCR from acutely affected cows\n<ul>\n<li>Convalescent serum samples: 2-3 weeks after initial sample collection for the IAV NP ELISA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Post mortem<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Milk and mammary tissue (fresh and fixed) from each quarter<\/li>\n<li>Lymph nodes (supramammary, mesenteric, tracheobronchial)<\/li>\n<li>Fresh and fixed: Lung, trachea, heart, liver, kidney, spleen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dairy producers are highly encouraged to contact their herd veterinarian to discuss this disease and measures that may reduce the risk to their operation.
