A member of our team is available to address ocular emergencies 24 hours a day. The provision of a high standard of care in veterinary ophthalmology demands not only clinical expertise but a range of technologically advanced instrumentation that is not available to most veterinarians. The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center provides a range of diagnostic and surgical ophthalmic equipment and procedures that are not available at any other veterinary clinic in the state of Iowa .<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6388\" src=\"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/vmc\/wp-content\/uploads\/ophthalmology-tearfilmmachine1-card.jpg\" alt=\"Tear film machine exam on a canine\" width=\"688\" height=\"688\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/vmc\/wp-content\/uploads\/ophthalmology-tearfilmmachine1-card.jpg 688w, https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/vmc\/wp-content\/uploads\/ophthalmology-tearfilmmachine1-card-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/vmc\/wp-content\/uploads\/ophthalmology-tearfilmmachine1-card-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 688px) 100vw, 688px\" \/>Diagnostic Procedures<\/h2>\n<p>Some examples of procedures that the ophthalmology service offers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Schirmer Tear Test: Assess the patient\u2019s tear production<\/li>\n<li>Fluorescein Staining: Helps identify the presence of corneal ulcers<\/li>\n<li>Slit-lamp Biomicroscopy: Allows for magnified examination of the ocular structures<\/li>\n<li>Indirect Ophthalmoscopy: Allows examination of the retina<\/li>\n<li>Gonioscopy and Tonometry: Tests that are used in the diagnosis of glaucoma<\/li>\n<li>Nasolacrimal Duct Flushing: Clears the duct that traverses from the eye into the nasal passage<\/li>\n<li>Ocular Photography: Allows state-of-the-art digital imaging system<\/li>\n<li>Ocular Ultrasonography: Facilitates examination of the structures of inner eye<\/li>\n<li>Electroretinography: Allows testing of the electrical function of the retina<\/li>\n<li>I.C.P. OSA-Vet: Allows full assessment of the ocular surface<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6068\" src=\"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/vmc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ophthalmology-horseeyes13-card.jpg\" alt=\"Ophthalmology equine eye surgery\" width=\"688\" height=\"688\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/vmc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ophthalmology-horseeyes13-card.jpg 688w, https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/vmc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ophthalmology-horseeyes13-card-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vetmed.iastate.edu\/vmc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ophthalmology-horseeyes13-card-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 688px) 100vw, 688px\" \/>Surgical Options<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to these diagnostic procedures, we provide a comprehensive range of surgical options for veterinary patients with eye disease, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eyelid and corneal surgery (including corneal grafts)<\/li>\n<li>Cataract surgery (using a state-of-the-art technique known as phacoemulsification)<\/li>\n<li>Lens implantation<\/li>\n<li>Laser surgery (for glaucoma, ocular tumors and retinal detachment)<\/li>\n<li>Glaucoma drainage implant surgery<\/li>\n<li>Photodynamic therapy (PDT) (for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--text-html\">\n\t<div class=\"text-content\">\n\t\t<h2>Clinical Trials<\/h2>\n<p>As part of the University and College\u2019s goal of improving care for pets, our faculty and staff are frequently engaged in clinical trials to identify improved methods of diagnosing diseases or investigations on novel therapeutics to provide the best treatments to improve patient outcomes.
