  • 07/25/2011 Home Page Kanthasamy Named Chair of Biomedical Sciences Department at Vet Med

    Dr. Anumantha G. Kanthasamy , Distinguished Professor and Lloyd Chair, has been named chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, effective July 22, 2011. He has served as associate chair of the department since July 2010. He replaces Dr. James Bloedel who returned to a faculty position earlier this summer.

    Today is opening day for the new client entry, waiting and reception areas that have been part of the renovation and expansion project. Soon after the doors opened, Piet, a nine-year old Golden Retriever, was recognized as the Honorary First Patient at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center's Small Animal Hospital.

  • 07/18/2011 Home Page Small Animal Hospital Opens Its New Doors

    The Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medicine Center at Iowa State University will reach another construction milestone on Tuesday, July 19, when the new Small Animal Hospital entry will be operational. The entry, client reception and waiting areas will be the most visible and striking changes to the newly renovated areas of the hospital. These areas have been designed with a focus on client comfort and patient care. The reception area is much larger and provides a more comfortable working environment and will allow greater efficiency for client and patient processing.

    AMES, Iowa -- Dedication and a commitment to raising awareness about rabies have earned Iowa State University veterinary students the opportunity to host the 2011 Merial Rabies Symposium on Sept. 24. The symposium is part of the observance of World Rabies Day, held annually each September.

    Dr. Mark R. Ackermann, professor of veterinary pathology, has been named Interim Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies,effective June 1, 2011. He replaces Dr. Qijing Zhang who has stepped away from the position to devote himself fully to his research program.

    Dr. Joe Haynes, professor of veterinary pathology for Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, has been named chair of the Department of Veterinary Pathology. His five-year appointment as chair began May 16.

  • 06/01/2011 Home Page ISU College of Veterinary Medicine Inducts New Veterinary Honor Society Members

    In a special reception held at Reiman Gardens, the Gamma Chapter of the Society of Phi Zeta at the College of Veterinary Medicine inducted 34 new members. Phi Zeta, the honor society of veterinary medicine, recognizes and promotes scholarship and research pertaining to the welfare and diseases of animals. When the Gamma Chapter of Phi Zeta was established at Iowa State in 1931, it was only the third such chapter in the nation. Today, there are 27 chapters.

  • 05/17/2011 Home Page Attention Horse Owners and Referring Veterinarians: Information on Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy

    At this time, the Large Animal Hospital at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center has not seen or heard of any cases of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in this area. Recently, there have been reports of EHM affecting an unconfirmed number of horses in the United States and Canada. This outbreak appears related to initial cases at a cutting horse show in Ogden, Utah, which was held from April 29 - May 8. Horses at that event may have been exposed to this virus and subsequently spread the infection to other horses.
