AMES, Iowa – Dr. Jennifer Schleining recently earned board certification from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). The certification is the highest credential in the field of veterinary surgery.
Dr. Schleining is an equine surgeon at the Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State University. ACVS board-certified veterinary surgeons are credentialed as "ACVS Diplomates," a designation that refers to a veterinarian who has been board-certified in veterinary surgery. Only veterinarians who have successfully completed the certification requirements of the ACVS are Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and have earned the right to be called specialists in veterinary surgery.
Only 1.67 percent of U.S. veterinarians are ACVS board-certified veterinary surgeons, 30 percent of those are women. “This is tremendous achievement,” said Dr. Rodney Bagley, executive director of the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center and chair of the veterinary clinical sciences department. “Ultimately, our large animal hospital clients and their animals will be the beneficiaries of her having achieved diplomate status.”
To become board certified, Dr. Schleining had to complete a three-year residency program, meet specific training and caseload requirements, and conduct and publish research. The final step in the process is to pass a rigorous examination, which she did last month.
Dr. Schleining has a B.S. from South Dakota State University (1999), and received her DVM (2001) and MS (2009) from Iowa State University.
