CVM’s Carnaccini Receives AAAP Award

Dr. Silvia Carnaccini, assistant professor of veterinary diagnostics and production animal medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has received the 2026 Bayer-Snoeyenbos New Investigator Award from the American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP).

Carnaccini’s primary research focuses on the study of the pathogenesis and biology of avian viral infectious diseases and the development of improved diagnostic virology platforms.

Her current projects include avian influenza at the wildlife-poultry-human interface, avian Metapneumovirus, and Egg Drop Syndrome. She collaborates with other researchers on the development and testing of avian organoids as a platform to study the pathogenesis of various avian viral diseases.

Carnaccini earned her DVM from the University of Bologna in Italy and a PhD in Comparative Biomedical Sciences from the University of Georgia where she also served as an assistant professor before joining the Iowa State faculty.

She is a member of the AAAP, the American College of Poultry Veterinarians, the Association of Veterinarians in Egg Production, and the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.

The Bayer-Snoeyenbos New Investigator Award is given to a member or associate member of AAAP whose career as an independent investigator in poultry medicine began less than seven years ago and who during this time has made meritorious research contributions to the avian field.
