Research Focus & Interests

Dr. McGill’s research focuses on the immune response to respiratory infections in cattle. The
laboratory currently studies the response to several respiratory pathogens including bovine
respiratory syncytial virus, Mannheimia haemolytica and Mycobacterium bovis, the causative
agent of bovine and zoonotic tuberculosis. Major projects in the lab are focused on the
importance of nonconventional T cells in the response to respiratory infections; development
of novel vaccine strategies to prevent respiratory disease; and investigating the impact of
certain micronutrients on the host immune response and resistance to respiratory infection.
The McGill lab is also interested in understanding how innate immune ‘training’ influences
immune development in the neonatal calf, and identifying strategies for enhancing innate
resistance to respiratory infections.
