Avoiding and Managing Laminitis

Doug shod his first horse as a ranch hand nearly 30 years ago. The result looked a lot like a train wreck on steroids. It was many years later before he pursued farriery as a career through an apprenticeship which stirred his passion to become a farrier.
Doug has served as the Michigan Horseshoers Association president and several years on the MHA board of directors. He is a past board member of the American Farriers Association (AFA), AFA examiner, AFA precertification instructor, chairman of the AFA’s research committee. Doug is a two-time winner of the AFA’s Outstanding Educator Award, and president of the newly formed American Farriers Association Foundation. He is an AFA Certified Journeyman Farrier and was the 18th American to become an Associate of The Worshipful Company of Farriers (UK).
Doug has spent the past 10 years at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine’s large animal hospital. He works closely with the hospital’s equine surgery team in the treatment of lameness. He co-teaches a half-semester lameness course for third-year veterinary students and teaches a two-week clinical rotation for fourth-year veterinary students. In this seminar, Doug will be discussing how he evaluates the confirmation of the horse and how it might impact soundness.
