Reproductive Services (Theriogenology)

Who We Are and What We Do

The Iowa State University Theriogenology Group is now providing state-of-the-art Assisted Reproductive Technologies to Production Animal producers throughout Iowa and the midwest. Food animal clients include cattle, sheep, goats and swine and are treated on-site in the Large Animal Clinic or on farm. Most frequently, clients bring their livestock to the theriogenology specialists for bull breeding soundness exams, treatment of bull breeding injuries, cattle pregnancy determination, high risk pregnancy management, laparoscopic artificial insemination and embryo transfer.  Some procedures are conducted on an out-patient basis, while other procedures require a clinic stay of a few days or longer if needed. Ultrasound capabilities, semen collection, semen cryopreservation and advanced diagnostics are readily available, as is general anesthesia for use in some procedures. Treatment rooms and surgical suites are equipped to accommodate the smallest ruminant to the largest bulls.
