Annually the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Iowa State University completes more than 125,000 cases.
But in the almost 80 years of existence, the VDL has never had a day like yesterday (Wednesday, Feb. 26).
All told, VDL faculty, staff and students received, processed and evaluated 893 case accessions from samples of 9,344 unique patient IDs. All the same day testing was fully completed with results going out by 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening.
“This is a great example of simply exemplary teamwork and competence in executing the VDL’s core mission of providing a best-in-class veterinary diagnostic service from beginning to end,” said Dr. Rodger Main, VDL director.
A national leader in protecting animal and human health, the full-service laboratories at the VDL conducts more than 1.7 million tests annually.
Fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, the VDL provides quality diagnostic services for animal species, including necropsy, bacteriology, serology, histopathology, virology, parasitology, molecular diagnostics, and toxicology as well as offering analytical services.
Phase 1 of a new VDL was completed and opened in March 2024 with construction ongoing on Phase 2, which is scheduled to be completed in 2026.
