BIO
After graduation, Dr. Lorraine Johnson Hoffman accepted a graduate teaching assistantship in the Department of Bacteriology at Iowa State University where she received her MS degree. After two years as a research associate in the microbiology section of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Dr. Hoffman was awarded a research assistantship to complete her PhD degree in bacteriology with an emphasis on immunology. Following completion of her PhD, she held a one-year postdoctoral appointment in the toxicology section of the VDL. In 1975 she was hired as assistant professor and Bacteriology Section Leader in the VDL, a role which she served for 31 years (she also assumed supervision of clinical microbiology when it was moved to the VDL in the 90s). In 2006, Dr. Hoffman was appointed to the position of VDL Director of Operations which she served until her retirement in 2009.
