Shearer Recipient of DeLaval Dairy Extension Award

Dr. Jan Shearer, professor and extension veterinarian at Iowa State University, received the 2015 DeLaval Dairy Extension Award at the American Dairy Science Association annual meeting July 14, 2015, in Orlando, Florida. Presented annually, the award recognizes outstanding achievements in dairy extension.

Shearer’s research and extension focuses are lameness and welfare issues of cattle. He has authored numerous scientific publications and presented foot-care training programs on lameness, welfare, euthanasia, and emergency response for cattle. Shearer has shared his expertise at veterinary and producer conferences and meetings.

He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (1975) and master’s degree (1981) from The Ohio State University. Shearer is a Diplomate of the American College of Animal Welfare, a specialty board on animal welfare.

Shearer is a past recipient of the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Animal Welfare Award, the 2003 USDA Secretary of Agriculture’s Honor Award for outstanding innovation in animal health. He has also been honored by the American Association of Bovine Practitioners with the Alpharma Award of Excellence in 2006, by The Ohio State University with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2006 and University of Florida with the Superior Accomplishment Award in 2001.

Prior to joining the faculty at Iowa State’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009, he was a professor and extension veterinarian at the University of Florida for 27 years.
