Ramsey Lecture: Using Innovation, Collaboration, and Curiosity to Impact Marine Mammal Health

Speaker: Shawn Johnson, DVM, MS

Dr. Shawn Johnson (ISU DVM ’96) is the co-founder and director of innovative medicine at Sea Change Health. There, he leads teams of specialists in providing advanced medical care and anesthesia while developing new techniques for marine mammals in managed care or wildlife field operations. Previously, Dr. Johnson led the largest marine mammal teaching hospital in the world at The Marine Mammal Center in California. There he and his team rescued and rehabilitated over 1,000 marine mammals per year and trained more than 100 veterinary students and veterinarians in marine mammal science. 

For six years, he served as the clinical veterinarian for the US Navy/National Marine Mammal Foundation where he cared for a population of over 75 dolphins and 25 sea lions, and where he was also deployed with the animals to remote sites and duty stations.
