High Honor

As president and general manager of Maplehurst Genetics International, Inc., Dr. Richard Carmichael (’55) established the first embryo transfer company in the United States. He was also the first person to “clone” cattle by producing two identical calves from a single embryo and holds U.S. and Japanese patents on equipment used to clone embryos. The retired veterinarian from Keota, Iowa, will be recognized for those achievements with the Iowa State University Alumni Association’s 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award, one of only three individuals who will receive the University’s highest alumni honor in ceremonies held on campus Friday, April 20.
