Dr. Mohamed El-Gazzar has joined Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine as an assistant professor of poultry medicine in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine.
El-Gazzar joins Dr. Yuko Sato, as the second poultry veterinarian on the faculty, and will further expand the teaching, research and outreach services offered by the department.
“Dr. El-Gazzar brings internationally recognized poultry medicine skills to the Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine Department,” said Dr. Locke Karriker, interim chair of the department. “His addition to the existing resources at the College of Veterinary Medicine means that a new, broader range of expertise focused on supporting the poultry and egg industries of Iowa is available and ready to help.”
El-Gazzar’s duties will include training veterinary and graduate students in the field of poultry medicine, as well as establishing a collaborative research program related to problems and opportunities facing Iowa’s and the U.S. poultry industries. He will also conduct applied research, focusing on treatment and management of poultry diseases.
Along with Dr. Sato, El-Gazzar will provide outreach to the commercial and noncommercial poultry industry.
“The Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine Department at Iowa State University is one of the leading institutions in swine medicine,” El-Gazzar said. “Our goal is to build the poultry medicine program and make it one of the leading and nationally recognized programs, as well. We have the resources, from the diagnostic laboratory to all the other units with expertise in the college, to reach that goal.”
El-Gazzar earned his bachelor’s degree in veterinary sciences from Cairo University in 2000. After graduation, he worked as a poultry technical services veterinarian in Egypt. He came to the United States in 2008, and earned his Master of Avian Medicine from the University of Georgia in 2009. He worked as a research assistant at The Ohio State University while earning his PhD in avian mycoplasmology. He earned his diplomate status of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians in 2010.
Prior to joining the faculty at Iowa State, El-Gazzar was an assistant professor of poultry medicine at The Ohio State University for three years.
El-Gazzar is a member of the American Association of Avian Pathologists, the World Veterinary Poultry Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, and the U.S. Animal Health Association.
