Dr. Daniel Linhares, associate professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine in Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), has been named the holder of the Roy A. Schultz Professorship in Swine Medicine.
Linhares works on field-based strategies to improve the health and productivity of swine populations. His team’s work includes the development and validation of monitoring and surveillance systems, biosecurity protocols, precision swine medicine and strategies to manager infectious disease affecting swine flows.
He also is the director of graduate education for the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) and has previously held a Dean’s Fellowship in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
With funds from the Schultz Professorship, Linhares plans to enhance the VDPAM graduate program by establishing the Roy Schultz Graduate Student Excellence Award and the Roy Schultz Graduate Student Scholarship. Additionally, travel awards will be created for VDPAM graduate students to present at a national or international conference.
“By investing in our graduate program, I hope to raise the profile, productivity and experience of our VDPAM graduate students. Graduate students will become our future leaders, bringing innovation to academia and the industry,” Linhares said. “They are hard working and often time do not receive the proper recognition.”
Linhares earned his DVM from Universidade Federal de Goias in Brazil, an MBA from Fundacao Getulio Vargas also in Brazil, and a PhD in veterinary population medicine from the University of Minnesota. He joined Iowa State’s faculty in 2015 and since then has been named the recipient of the ISU Award for Early Career Achievement in Research and the CVM Award for Early Career Achievement in Research.
“There is nothing that brings me more joy than watching our graduate students succeed,” Linhares said. “I encourage graduate students to develop independent, critical thinking goals while guiding them to focus on the solution and to think of possible ways to positively impact the industry using applied science.
“There is no better place for graduate students to learn swine population sciences than Iowa State. We are surrounded by experts, have world-class infrastructure, and are in the heart of the swine industry. I am certainly proud of being part of this winning team.”
The Schultz Professorship was established by Dr. Roy Schultz, a 1960 College of Veterinary Medicine graduate and internationally renowned swine veterinarian who resides in Avoca, Iowa.
