Rachel Allbaugh, DVM, MS, a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, joined the faculty at Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State University on Nov. 15. Allbaugh will be joining Dr. David Whitley as the second board-certified ophthalmologist on the staff, and will further advance the ophthalmology services offered at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center.
“We are looking forward to Dr. Rachel Allbaugh joining the comparative ophthalmology section at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University,” Dr. Whitley said. “Rachel and her husband are both natives of Waterloo, Iowa. Like Dr. Ben-Shlomo and I, Rachel has an interest in ophthalmic diseases of small animals and horses. She will add tremendously to our ophthalmology practice and teaching efforts and our future offerings at ISU.”
Allbaugh’s primary clinical interests include eyelid, corneal and intraocular surgeries, as well as all equine and feline ophthalmology cases. She has authored several scientific papers and has been an invited speaker and continuing education instructor at national and state veterinary conferences. Allbaugh joins two other ophthalmology faculty members, Drs. David Whitley and Gil Ben-Shlomo in the VMC.
In addition to seeing patients at the VMC, Allbaugh will be involved in teaching veterinary students and training interns and residents in ophthalmology. She will also continue her research interests.
"I am very excited to join the wonderful faculty of Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine!” Dr. Allbaugh said. “As an Iowa native and ISU graduate it is great to return ‘home’ and be able to serve the clients and patients of Iowa as well as be able to teach our future veterinarians."
Allbaugh is a 2004 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Kansas State University, where she also received her master’s degree. In 2008, she earned board-certification from the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.
Prior to coming to Iowa State, Allbaugh was an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Kansas State University.
