Dr. Joe Haynes, professor of veterinary pathology for Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, has been named chair of the Department of Veterinary Pathology. His five-year appointment as chair began May 16.
"We look forward to Dr. Haynes joining the college's administrative team," said Dr. Lisa K. Nolan, professor and Dr. Stephen G. Juelsgaard Dean of Veterinary Medicine. "I believe he will bring a wealth of experience to the position. His sound judgment and reasoned decision-making are widely appreciated, which is reflected by the strong support he has among his colleagues."
Dr. Haynes received his DVM from the University of Missouri (1979) and his PhD in veterinary pathology from the University of Minnesota (1986). He is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
He came to Iowa State in 1986 as an assistant professor, rising through the academic ranks to professor in the college's veterinary pathology department. In 2000-2001, he served as interim chair of the veterinary pathology department. Early in his career, Dr. Haynes was a mixed animal practitioner in Missouri. Dr. Haynes is an accomplished teacher, winning awards for teaching excellence throughout his career. As a researcher, his scientific papers have been published in many publications.
Dr. Haynes serves as editor and reviewer for several prestigious journals such as the American Journal of Veterinary Research, Veterinary Pathology and Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation.
Dean Nolan also thanked Dr. Mike Wannemuehler, chair of the Vet Path Department Chair Search Committee and committee members, Drs. Jesse Hostetter, Heather Flaherty, Angela Pillatzki, and Phyllis Fisher, for their service on the committee.
