Dr. James McKean received the President’s Award from the National Institute of Animal Agriculture at the organization’s annual conference March 27-28.
Dr. McKean, University Professor and Extension Veterinarian at Iowa State University, was recognized for his exemplary leadership and dedication to the NIAA.
“When NIAA established its Global Animal Health, Food Security & Trade Council last year, Dr. McKean graciously answered our request to co-chair this important council,” states Scott Stuart, NIAA’s Managing Director. “A visionary with a brilliant mind, Dr. McKean encourages others to think beyond what is visible and challenging. His way of being liberates others so they feel free to express themselves and share their true thoughts, beliefs and ideas without fear of concern or ridicule. As a result, honest, in-depth discussions—where all angles of topics are on the table—are put forth.”
Dr. McKean received his DVM from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1970, and his MS from Michigan State University in 1973. He also has a Juris Doctor degree from Drake University.
He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Law Association, National Association of Food Hygiene Veterinarians and Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, and is a member and past president of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians. He is an active member on a number of state and national swine-related committees for veterinary and swine producer organizations. In addition he has been a member of a National Academy of Sciences (NAS) committee on dioxins in food supply and currently serves on a NAS Committee for Phase II, Ranking FDA Product Categories Based on Health Consequences and New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) evaluation panel for PRRS risk assessment.
The National Institute for Animal Agriculture is a non-profit, membership-driven organization that unites and advances animal agriculture—the beef, dairy, equine, goat, poultry, sheep and swine industries.
