AMES, Iowa – After two years of construction and years of planning and design, Iowa State University will dedicate its new Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital at the College of Veterinary Medicine on Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m.

The dedication of the hospital marks the completion of the two-phase renovation and expansion project of the Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center that began in 2006 with the construction of Phase I, the large animal and equine hospital.

At 105,000 square feet, the $45.1 million Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital is one of the largest and newest small animal hospitals in the country. Twice the size of the original hospital built in 1976, the Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital is a world-class facility with a dedicated staff committed to providing preventive and advanced veterinary specialty care to patients, educating future veterinarians, and advancing animal and human health through clinical research.

The $45.1 million project was made possible through bonding approved? by the Iowa Legislature and more? than $5 million in private support. The Lied Foundation Trust of Las Vegas, Nev., through its trustee, native Iowan Christina Hixson, provided the $3 million lead gift to the project.

“The dedication of the hospital is a significant milestone in our college’s history,” said Dr. Lisa K. Nolan, Dr. Stephen G. Juelsgaard Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. “We are deeply grateful to Ms. Hixson for her generosity, which allowed us to bring to fruition this amazing upgrade to our hospital.”

“Through the leadership of dean emeritus Dr. John U. Thomson and the support of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, alumni and friends, including Ms. Hixson, our faculty, staff and students, working in this facility, are poised to make highly significant contributions to animal and human health for a very long time,” Dr. Nolan said.

The new hospital has 22 examination rooms, five treatment rooms, 10 rooms for rounds and student teaching, an emergency and intensive/critical care unit for 24/7 medical care, a pet rehabilitation room, an advanced imaging suite, and a 16,000 square-foot anesthesia/surgical suite complex, including facilities for dentistry, endoscopy, and minor surgery/procedures rooms.

The client waiting area was designed to provide maximum natural lighting, with animal murals and artwork throughout. The reception area has species-specific waiting areas, and was designed for client and patient comfort.

Tours of the small animal hospital will be available directly after the ceremony. The program includes:
