New Small Animal Internist Joins Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at ISU

March 8, 2013

When Dr. Dana LeVine graduated from veterinary school, she didn’t want just to practice a trade; she wanted to help develop the science of veterinary medicine. Now a board-certified veterinary internist, Dr. LeVine will be able to fulfill that goal as an assistant professor in the small animal internal medicine section at the Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State University.

“I always wanted to advance veterinary medicine, and to help improve the health of animals through development of new treatments,” Dr. LeVine said. “I love the constant diagnostic dilemmas and treatment challenges of internal medicine.”

Dr. LeVine became interested in biological sciences and companion animals during her childhood in Port Jefferson, New York. Those interests led her to study molecular biochemistry and biophysics at Yale University, and later to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University in 2004. After completing a rotating internship at the University of Georgia and a residency program in small animal internal medicine at North Carolina State University, she earned a PhD in Comparative Biomedical Sciences at North Carolina State University.

In addition to seeing patients at the VMC, Dr. LeVine will be teaching veterinary students and training interns and residents in small animal internal medicine. She will also continue her research in veterinary hematology, the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of blood disorders.

Dr. LeVine lives in Ames with her husband David who will start this fall as an assistant professor in the philosophy department at Iowa State University. They share their house with Calhoun, a “Georgia black dog,” and two cats, Wraith and Salt.

She joins Drs. Robert King, Al Jergens, Jo Ann Morrison, and Krysta Deitz, board-certified small animal internists at the Lloyd VMC.
