CVM Convocation Awards are presented during the Fall Semester. Nominations for 2024 are closed.
Merit Employee of the Year
- Objective: To recognize and honor merit employees who have achieved excellence in their respective fields.
- Eligibility: Merit employees who have been in the Merit system for more than 12 years as of the nomination deadline.
- Criteria: Must show evidence of commitment and service to the department and college, quality of work – a vital and contributing employee; and excellence in cooperation with other employees, faculty, students and the public.
- Submission: Statement (maximum 2 pages) as to why this individual should be considered for this award. Additional supporting materials may include supporting letters.
Merit Mid-Career Employee of the Year
- Objective: To recognize and honor merit employees who have achieved excellence in their respective fields.
- Eligibility: Merit employees who have been in the Merit system 6-12 years as of the nomination deadline.
- Criteria: Must show evidence of commitment and service to the department and college, quality of work – a vital and contributing employee; and excellence in cooperation with other employees, faculty, students and the public.
- Submission: Statement (maximum 2 pages) as to why this individual should be considered for this award. Additional supporting materials may include supporting letters.
Merit New Employee of the Year
- Objective: To recognize and honor merit employees who have achieved excellence early in their respective fields.
- Eligibility: Merit employees who have been in the Merit system for 5 years or fewer as of the nomination deadline.
- Criteria: Must show evidence of commitment and service to the department and college, quality of work – a vital and contributing employee; and excellence in cooperation with other employees, faculty, students and the public.
- Submission: Statement (maximum 2 pages) as to why this individual should be considered for this award. Additional supporting materials may include supporting letters.
Resident/Intern of the Year
- Objective: To recognize and honor residents/interns who have demonstrated significant contributions to the training/education program.
- Eligibility: Residents/interns on staff from the past fiscal year.
- Criteria: Documented evidence of clinical accomplishments and impact of their work on their discipline as evaluated by peers and experts in their field; Evidence of a positive impact of their mentorship and/or teaching on CVM students; Evidence of positive relationships with referring veterinarians and clients.
- Submission: Statement (maximum 2 pages) as to why this individual should be considered for this award. Additional supporting materials may include CV and supporting letters.
Graduate Student of the Year
- Objective: To recognize and honor graduate students and/or post docs who have demonstrated significant contributions to the college's research program.
- Eligibility: Graduate Students
- Criteria: Documented evidence of superior performance in publishable research (i.e., national or international referred publications, theses dissertations, abstracts, poster presentations). The quality and amount of published research during the individual's time in the College of Veterinary Medicine will be considered. Graduate students are also expected to be academically superior.
- Submission: Statement (maximum 2 pages) as to why this individual should be considered for this award along with current CV. Additional supporting materials include supporting letters.
Post Doc of the Year
- Objective: To recognize and honor graduate students and/or post docs who have demonstrated significant contributions to the college's research program.
- Eligibility: Post Docs
- Criteria: Documented evidence of superior performance in publishable research (i.e., national or international referred publications, theses dissertations, abstracts, poster presentations). The quality and amount of published research during the individual's time in the College of Veterinary Medicine will be considered. Graduate students are also expected to be academically superior.
- Submission: Statement (maximum 2 pages) as to why this individual should be considered for this award along with current CV. Additional supporting materials include supporting letters.
Service Team of the Year
- Objective: To recognize and honor a team of faculty/staff who have made a significant contribution to the missions of research, teaching, outreach and/or public service in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
- Eligibility: CVM faculty/staff team.
- Criteria: Documented evidence of innovative, creative or original ways in accomplishing team’s job responsibilities; Documented evidence of fiscal responsibility and/or achieving research goals; and/or creating new educational opportunities for CVM students; and/or the development of positive service or outreach relationships with external groups including clients, referring veterinarians and the general public.
- Submission: Statement (maximum 3 pages) as to why this team should be considered for this award. Additional supporting materials may include supporting letters.
International Service Award
- Objective: To recognize CVM faculty and staff for outstanding international service in terms of teaching, research, or administration, within the United States or abroad.
- Eligibility: CVM faculty and staff. Former recipients of the award are not eligible.
- Criteria: Significant and sustained contributions to the internationalization of Iowa State University; evidence of excellence and impact in scholarship related to position description, including where applicable, research and outreach of international dimensions, infusing international perspectives in teaching, and international service.

Award for Outstanding Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice
- Objective: To recognize a faculty, staff or field staff member who has demonstrated outstanding performance in statewide leadership in extension and/or professional practice and has achieved national recognition of his/her contributions to outreach activities.
- Eligibility: Members of the faculty or professional staff with a minimum of 10 years of service at ISU. Former recipients of the award are not eligible.
- Criteria: Documented evidence of outstanding contributions to the university's outreach mission over an extended period of time, including testimony from peers and clients.

Award for Early Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice
- Objective: To recognize a faculty, campus staff or field staff member who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in extension and/or professional practice unusually early in her/his professional career.
- Eligibility: Members of the faculty or professional staff with no more than 6 years of experience post Ph.D. (or other appropriate terminal degree) and a minimum of 2 years at ISU. Former recipients of the award are not eligible.
- Criteria: A record of exemplary performance as documented by clients and peers.

Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching
- Objective: To recognize faculty members for outstanding teaching performance over an extended period of time.
- Eligibility: Tenured faculty status with a minimum of 5 years of service at ISU prior to current academic year and 10 years of classroom experience in higher education. Former recipients of the award are not eligible.
OR
Term faculty status with a minimum of 5 years of service at ISU prior to current academic year and 10 years of classroom experience in higher education. - Criteria: Documented evidence, including student and peer evaluations, of outstanding classroom teaching performance, supplemented by evidence of instructional contributions outside the classroom.

Award for Early Achievement in Teaching
- Objective: To recognize faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding teaching performance unusually early in their professional careers.
- Eligibility: Tenured or tenure-track faculty who have a maximum of 6 years teaching experience since the start of their independent academic career and have completed a minimum of two academic years of appointment as an ISU faculty member. An independent academic career is defined as the start of a tenure-track faculty position. Former recipients of the award are not eligible.

Term faculty who have a maximum of 6 years teaching experience since the start of their independent academic career and have completed a minimum of two academic years of appointment as an CVM faculty member. An independent academic career is define as the start of a faculty position. - Criteria: Evidence of outstanding performance as a teacher, as documented by students and peers.

Professional and Scientific Excellence Award
- Objective: The Professional and Scientific Excellence Award recognizes and honors professional and scientific staff members who have been employed by Iowa State University for more than 12 years and who have achieved excellence in their respective fields.
- Eligibility: Employed by the College of Veterinary Medicine for more than 12 years and achieved excellence in respective field. Former recipients of the award are not eligible.
- Criteria: Professional contributions/service within the the College of Veterinary Medicine.
- Submission: Please send a letter of nomination (2 page maximum) highlighting the candidate's credentials.
Professional and Scientific Mid-Career Award
- Objective: The Professional and Scientific Mid-Career Professional Award recognizes and honors professional and scientific staff members who have been employed by Iowa State University for 6-12 years and who have achieved excellence in their respective fields.
- Eligibility: Open to all current CVM professional and scientific employees who have been in the P&S system for 6-12 years as of the nomination deadline. Former recipients of the award are not eligible.
- Criteria: Demonstrated innovative, creative or original ways in accomplishing job responsibilities.
- Submission: Please send a letter of nomination (2 page maximum) highlighting the candidate's credentials.
Professional and Scientific New Professional Award
- Objective: The Professional and Scientific New Professional Award recognizes and honors professional and scientific staff members who have been employed by Iowa State University for less than five years and who have achieved excellence in their respective fields.
- Eligibility: Open to all current CVM professional and scientific employees who have been in the P&S system for 5 years or fewer as of the nomination deadline. Former recipients of the award are not eligible.
- Criteria: Demonstrated innovative, creative or original ways in accomplishing job responsibilities.
- Submission: Please send a letter of nomination (2 page maximum) highlighting the candidate's credentials.
Professional and Scientific Research Award
- Objective: To recognize professional and scientific staff members for excellence in research.
- Eligibility: Professional and scientific staff members who have conducted research at ISU as a P&S employee for at least five years as of January 1 of the year in which the award is to be given. Former recipients of the award are not eligible.
- Criteria: Documented evidence of notable independent research accomplishments as evaluated by supervisors and/or experts in the nominee's field. Evidence of the impact of the contributions on the nominee's discipline. Evidence of external recognition independent of that of any mentor or supervisor. The candidates will be judged by the body of their work while P&S employees in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

CVM Champion Award
- Objective: To recognize Iowa State University employees for excellence in their service to the College of Veterinary Medicine
- Eligibility: Iowa State University employees and affiliate employees who work with or in the College of Veterinary Medicine but are not affiliated with the College. Examples include ISU Dining, Facilities, Planning and Management, Public Safety, ISU Foundation, Counseling, Human Resources, Finance Delivery among others
- Criteria: Demonstrated innovative, creative or original ways in accomplishing job responsibilities.
- Submission: Please send a letter of nomination (2 page maximum) highlighting the candidate's credentials.
CONVOCATION RESEARCH AWARDS
CVM Award for Mid-Career Achievement in Research
- Objective: To recognize CVM faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in research at the mid-career stage.
- Eligibility: Tenured or tenure-track faculty who have had independent academic careers of 6-13 years and at least three years of employment at ISU. An independent academic career is defined as the start of a tenure track-track position. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the College Awards Ceremony in late August.
- Criteria: Documented evidence of exemplary research accomplishments and impacts. Significant national and international recognition in the academic community. Evidence of a positive impact on undergraduate students, professional students, graduate students, or postdoctoral associates. The candidates will be judged by the body of their work since their terminal degree.

CVM Award for Early Career Achievement in Research

RESEARCH DAY AWARD
Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence
- The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding research effort and productivity by veterinary scientists pursuing innovative research. Nominees must be members of the faculty at Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine or at a nationally recognized teaching/research hospital. These individuals should also be the principal investigator in research that has attained or is likely to attain national recognition. This research must have been conducted within the past three years.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION AWARDS
Frederick Douglass Patterson Diversity and Inclusion Award
- This award recognizes CVM faculty and P&S staff who have advanced the college's mission through involvement in college initiatives and an indication of continuing commitment to these areas.

TEACHING & ADVISING AWARDS (Presented by CVM Students)
Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award
- This award is voted on each year by the veterinary students and is given to those faculty members who, through their dedication, character and leadership, contribution significantly to the advancement of the profession, especially through their teaching.
William O. Reece Award
- This award was established by Dr. William O. Reece in 1994 and is presented for veterinary student academic advising, voted on by the veterinary students. Each year, the award is given to veterinary faculty and/or staff member who serves as a faculty mentor and contact for veterinary students and is a sincere student advocate, who demonstrates compassionate, understanding, and guidance through mentoring and the ability to provide networking for the veterinary students.
